Waste Engineer - BWSR - Idaho Falls, ID

BWSR, a subsidiary of BWXT, is the Decontamination, Decommissioning, and Demolition (D&D) sub-contractor the Naval Reactors Facility in Idaho Falls, ID, and performs the remediation of legacy nuclear and environmental materials on site. The main projects at the site include remediation of historical research facilities, demolition of buildings, and characterization of site-infrastructure to support on-going maintenance and construction.

This position is responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the BWSR-NRF waste management programs environmental engineering programs are compliant with federal, state, and local environmental and waste regulations. Specific attributes to be considered include waste characterization, packaging, storage, and disposition, waste minimization and pollution prevention, including compliance to RCRA, TSCA, CAA, CWA. NESHAPS, NEPA, CERCLA, and DOT regulations.

Specific responsibilities include:

Prepare sampling and analysis plans in accordance with SW-846 guidelines.

Provide oversight of field sampling operations.

Intrepret laboratory analytical data and characterize materials for disposal in accordance with application RCRA and TSCA requirements and disposal facility waste acceptance criteria.

Ensure work documents specify compliant characterization, management, packaging and disposition of project-generated waste. This includes PCB, RCRA-hazardous, low-level radioactive, mixed low-level, asbestos, industrial waste, and universal waste.

Develop solutions to technical problems associated with environmental engineering and waste management.

Interface with the customer to ensure that BWSR is meeting NRF's environmental and waste management objectives.

Attend DOT Hazardous Material training as required by 49 CFR 172 Subpart I, DOE regulations, and Naval Reactors Program instructions.

Obtain and maintain NRF-specific environmental qualifications as assigned.

Job Qualifications / Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Engineering, Waste Management, Environmental Sciences, or related science, engineering, or technical field. Applicable Bachelor's degree plus seven years experience, or applicable Master's degree plus six years relevant experience. A minimum of ten years applicable experience may be substituted for formal education with the approval of the Site Project Manager and the customer.

Must have a working knowledge of RCRA, TSCA, and DOT regulations pertaining to the packaging and management of hazardous, mixed, and PCB-contaminated mixed waste.

Must maintain qualification as a radiological contamination worker.

Must be able to secure and maintain a DOE L Clearance.

Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Position requires U.S. Citizenship (with no dual citizenship) and ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance which involves an extensive criminal and financial background investigation and previous employment reference verifications.
