Unit Operator (R)','1701051','!*!Under general supervision and on a rotating shift basis, this classification is responsible for the safe, efficient, and proper operation of all equipment associated with the respective generating units. This classification starts, operates, and shuts down boilers and their auxiliaries: turbines and their auxiliaries, generators and their auxiliaries, and all other necessary plant equipment from a central control room. This classification directs the activities of other plant operators. Performs minor maintenance as assigned when not operating. May be assigned vibration analysis.

Typical Duties

Performs all work in a safe manner. Complies with all applicable safety rules, regulations and procedures. Performs all work that they are qualified and trained to do in a manner to protect themselves, their fellow employees and the general public from injury.

Properly relieves the previous shift, including checking for special orders, operating conditions, data sheets, log sheets, alarm panels/points and the general condition of the equipment as indicated by the panel instruments. Directs personnel to check out equipment prior to initiating starting activities. Notifies the plant supervisor of critical or abnormal operating conditions.

Starts, operates, changes load on and shuts down boilers and boiler auxiliaries whose controls are located in the central control room. Utilizes plant process control computer(s) or similar equipment. Continuously checks and maintains proper operating parameters such as boiler water level, superheat and reheat steam temperature, all windbox and air duct pressures, furnace pressure and fuel-air ratios, combustion, cold end metal temperatures of the air heaters, igniter gas and fuel oil pressure, air heater in and out temperatures, seal air pressure, cooling water temperature and pressure, water and steam flow rated, steam pressure, fuel and air flow rates, instrument air pressure, service air pressure, and sootblowing air pressure. Operates auxiliary equipment and associated monitoring equipment from the control room. May operate coal-conveying equipment from the control room.

Starts, operates, changes load on, and shuts down turbines and turbine auxiliary equipment. Monitors and takes corrective action as indicated by such instruments as turbine vibration equipment, valve position, eccentricity, oil temperature, and hotwell temperature. Checks and maintains hotwell level, deaerator level, condensate and other water storage tanks, and feedwater pressure. Operates such turbine auxiliary equipment.

Starts, operates, changes load on, and shuts down generators and generator auxiliaries. Synchronizes the generator to the transmission system in the correct fashion and performs switching duties as necessary from the control room equipment. Changes generator MW and VAR loadings as requested by System Operations and as dictated by operating needs. Operates generator auxiliary systems such as the hydrogen system and the generator cooling systems.

Maintains a chronological record of data on the operation of the plants and records data as required or directed for proper unit operation, either manually or through use of the plant computer system. May initiate work requests.

May direct the operation of water make-up and treatment equipment such as condensate polishers and demineralizers to maintain proper water levels. Operates plant communications equipment. May perform clean-up duties and assist plant maintenance groups when not operating. May be assigned training duties. Operates all fire protection systems as needed. Operates other station equipment as necessary for the proper operation of the station.

May operate diesel generators and combustion turbines from the control room where applicable.

May maintain outage tag records and reports.

Operates within established environmental criteria.','!*!
