Transportation Manager

Renowned catering company Occasions Caterers located in Washington, DC is seeking an energetic and highly motivated person to join our team. Prior experience in fine dining catering or hospitality and a passion for food is desirable.

The Transportation Manager oversees all functions of the Occasions Transportation Department. This position schedules and monitors all deliveries and pick ups, planning efficiently to minimize labor costs while ensuring on time arrivals. In conjunction with the Shipping and Receiving Manager and Manager on Duty, this position manages driver down time to guarantee maximum efficiency. The position oversees the entire fleet including maintenance, and advises on vehicle purchases. Facilitates proper communication and teamwork needed to satisfy internal sales department and other members of the management team.



Essential Functions





  1. Creates a daily run sheet and driver assignment sheet, optimizing delivery routes and ensuring on time deliveries and pick ups.


  2. Oversees the loading of food and equipment into trucks in conjunction with the Shipping and Receiving Manager.


  3. Generates a weekly schedule for staff, minimizing labor costs, while meeting the demands of business.


  4. Interviews and recommends applicants to ensure the transportation department is properly staffed.


  5. Trains and retrains staff; ensures their ability to safely operate equipment; counsels, records and disciplines as necessary.


  6. Maintains the fleet from both a mechanical and cleanliness standpoint. Researches both equipment and vehicles to ensure procurement of the most suitable equipment in terms of performance, safety, reliability and cost.


  7. Generates transportation security lists for the sales team in a timely manner and in the correct format.


  8. Maintains inter-departmental open lines of communication for maximum effectiveness.


  9. Recommends annual budget requirements for the transportation department. Anticipates and requests funding for future personnel requirements. Anticipates and requests funding for future equipment needed.


  10. Fosters and promotes a cooperative working climate, maximizing productivity and employee morale.


  11. Maintains a favorable working relationship with all other company departments to foster aid promote a cooperative and harmonious working relationship.


  12. Provides detailed reporting of accidents, damages, and injuries to VP of Operations and Director of HR.


  13. Controls building security by monitoring cameras and issuing employee entrance key cards.

Work Environment



This position works in a warehouse setting, with some outdoor exposure during the workday. 



Position Type and Expected Hours of Work



This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Evening, weekend and holiday work may be required as job duties demand.



Required Education and Experience





  1. Bachelor’s degree and or any equivalent combination of related education and experience.


  2. Five (5) or more years of experience in a fleet management or logistics role.


  3. Technologically savvy; proficient in Microsoft Office.


  4. Preferred experience in hospitality or food service industry.


  5. Familiarity with Washington, D.C. event sites preferred.


  6. Bilingual (second language other than English) preferred.
