Transportation Manager

Position Summary:

The Manager, Transportation reports to the VP Retail Distribution and is responsible for planning and managing all domestic freight and parcel spend, including operational and fiscal responsibility for these activities. The Manager will take a strategic leadership approach and will be accountable for creating plans to develop and integrate the capabilities of the organization in line with the current Logistics Mission. The Transportation Manager ensures that internal and external customers receive the highest level of service, makes decisions that maximize supply chain performance and cost metrics, and builds strong associate work teams with a positive work environment.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Serve as Day to Day point of contact for outbound transportation for Store Operations, Distribution Operations and Carriers.

Review Outbound Invoices Weekly and bring discrepancies to the attention of the Director of Transportation.

Monitor and Track:

Outbound Cost per week

Outbound Miles per week

Route Counts per week

Stop Counts per week

Carton Counts per week

Complete Weekly Outbound Report showing:

Cost per mile by carrier and DC

Cost per route by carrier and DC

Cost per stop by carrier and DC

Cost per carton by carrier and DC

Track and Manage All Late Delivery Issues, addressing with the carrier as needed. Verify Belk management team and store notifications are performed in a timely manner by carriers.

Identify and Track Cost of Delay, both due to carrier and stores.

Track Cancellations and Adds to the delivery schedule. Work with the DC to address the causes.

Review Outbound Case Forecast with, Store Ops, DC Staff, and Carriers.

Coordinate Third Party Backhaul and Internal Backhaul with the dedicated carriers.

Review Yard Ops and Trailer Pool Daily; ensure proper trailer utilization by dedicated carrier for 3rd party inbound movements.

Review Equipment Repair Invoices prior to being processed

Requirements/Qualifications:

4 or more years of applicable experience

Specific work or project experience: of transportation and/or supply chain as an operator with a career path showing increasing responsibility in transportation, logistics and supply chain leadership to include managing an exempt staff

Excellent strategic and critical thinking skills

Enthusiastic team leader

Strong people leadership and management skills

Demonstrated sense of urgency

Personable, motivated, entrepreneurial, outgoing

Excellent relationship management skills

Track record of working cross-functionally with a focus on merchandising, vendors, customers / stores and finance.

Well-developed analytical skills with reference to merchandise, vendors and freight; identification and development of transportation trends; transportation systems operations; and expense control efforts.

Ability to persuade and influence others, collaborative, accountable for results, impeccable record of delivering on their promise.

Experience in transportation management systems / supply chain technology.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare strong business cases and to support and defend ideas and positions.

Proven change management skills and reputation for building and leading high-performing, cross-functional teams that achieve their goals; track record in attracting, developing, and retaining talent.

A champion on new initiatives with an ability to successfully work across different groups, and to execute by bridging functional and divisional silos.

Ability to Travel to Distribution/Fulfillment Centers as well as Corporate Office
