About the Opportunity
The engineer position will be part of the Transmission Metering group within FirstEnergy’s Transmission Operations organization, owning and supporting all aspects of electric metering, including communications and data requirements. The Transmission Metering group is the centralized owner of all transmission metering equipment, standards, and processes across all FirstEnergy operating companies. The group is also responsible in providing strategic direction and vision of transmission metering (operational and revenue) to optimize operational and financial performance.
Managing diverse projects, processes, and programs affecting transmission metering with minimal supervision.
Providing technical support for transmission metering including installation, programming, maintenance, and potential replacement of metering equipment.
Coordinating, managing, and prioritizing the repair and replacement of defective metering equipment.
Coordinating and participating in regular meetings with various engineering and technical groups to resolve metering problems.
Working closely and collaboratively with internal and external groups on new metering projects, upgrades, and repairs.
Applying engineering skills and operational knowledge in the identification and resolution of metering problems and/or data integrity issues.
Assisting in the development of new or modification of existing procedures, standards, practices and/or processes related to transmission metering.
Ensuring metering standards and practices meet regulatory standards and requirements (FERC, NERC, PJM, and state regulatory bodies).
Serving as the subject matter expert for all aspects related to transmission metering.
Staying engaged with PJM and industry peers to establish best practices, identify industry trends/issues, and the development of reporting metrics.
Preparing technical reports and summaries, as well as preparing and making presentations when necessary.
Producing results that have a direct, positive impact on the company.
Working both independently and with others to achieve company goals and objectives.
Meeting customer needs by providing professional and timely service.
Demonstrating a solid commitment to all aspects of safety.
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited school is required.
3 years' professional engineering experience.
Basic researching skills required.
Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently on assignments that may be broad in nature involving the compilation, preparation, and analysis of various statistical/analytical data, reports, statements, studies, or projects.
Ability to review and understand substation one-line diagrams.
Ability to analyze complex problems and demonstrating good judgment in decision-making is essential.
Demonstrated ability to manage diverse projects and the ability to multi-task as needed.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, with departments in multiple locations.
Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point.
Ability to deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines.
Self-motivated, self-starter, customer focused, and results oriented.
Desire to continue to learn and grow, work across FirstEnergy, and deliver results.
Familiarity with the design, application and operational characteristics of metering equipment and systems is considered, a plus.
Familiarity with, and use of the real-time Energy Management System (EMS) and the MV-90 billing system is a plus.
Knowledge of North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), and PJM standards and policies of the electric utility industry is a plus.
Previous working knowledge of electric metering equipment and systems in the utility industry is preferred.
Understanding of Oracle data repositories and query tools such as MS Access or Tool for Oracle Application Developers (TOAD) or similar tools is a plus.
Knowledge of electric meter standards including ANSI, and IEEE is a plus.
Understanding of substations and substation devices is preferred.
Knowledge of the electric transmission system, reliability standards, and regional transmission organizations is a plus.
