Supply Chain Internship/Co-Op (Summer 2018)

The Role

Our Supply Chain Department is deeply engrained in the functional areas of the business and partners heavily with the leadership team on critical decisions. Team members are expected not only to have the skills to analyze data and surface takeaways/recommendations, but must also lead cross-functional decision-making processes and communicate recommendations to leaders at all levels in the company. Through the intern program, we are looking to find the next wave of talent to drive these efforts.

Tesla Motors Supply Chain team is comprised of six subgroups: Global Supply Purchasing, Supplier Industrialization, Logistics Management, Packaging, Trade & Compliance, Supply Chain Automation and Materials Planning. Interns will be assigned to one of our six sub-groups, based on prior experience, interests, and educational background. Specific project assignments and required technical aptitude will vary based on the needs of the individual hiring team

Team Overviews

Global Supply Purchasing

Is responsible for sourcing, issuing and evaluating RFQs, resolving commercial issues and complex negotiations, developing commodity strategies and overall supplier management. This team interfaces with Supplier Industrialization, Engineering, Product Excellence, Service and Manufacturing on various projects, including cost reduction and product launch.

Supplier Industrialization

Is responsible for developing, managing, auditing, improving and correcting supplier planning and execution of manufacturing techniques and quality control processes from the advanced development phase to mass production qualification. They are also responsible for guiding suppliers in developing exceptionally robust processes and procedures to promote efficient and seamless production of high quality products.

Logistics Management

Is responsible for the inbound and outbound transportation management, fleet management, materials handling, order fulfillment, logistics network design, and management of third party logistics services providers.

Packaging

Is responsible for design and implementation of all packaging materials, including custom racks, standard baskets, totes, in-process packaging, expendable packaging, and material handling equipment. In addition, they analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine physical requirements, quality, safety and materials needs.

Global Trade & Compliance

Is responsible in maintaining a high level of compliance with import, customs and export rules and regulations while minimizing costs and complexity within Tesla’s overall supply chain.

Supply Chain Automation

: Is responsible analyzing various aspects of the supply chain’s operations and identify opportunities for improvement, and drive implementation for automating such process. This team is involved in TMS Development, Analytics, Process Development, and support new market launches.

Material Planning:

Is making sure that all parts and materials needed in production arrive at the factory at the right time. Material Planning’s objective is to prevent line downs while keeping inventory levels at a minimum. Planners translate production demand into orders to suppliers, monitor supplier execution, and find solutions for shortage risks.

This role is available across various Tesla locations, including headquarters in Palo Alto, CA, the factory in Fremont, CA, and Gigafactory 1 in Sparks, NV – must be able to relocate for the duration of your internship

Required Skills and Qualifications

Currently working towards a BS, MS, MBA or PhD in a relevant Supply Chain, Industrial Engineering, Packaging, Mechanical Engineering or relevant program.

Excellent skills with Microsoft Excel.

Ability to develop and maintain key project metrics and assure compliance with federal, state, local, and corporate policies. You must be self-managed and committed to working in a fast-paced environment.

Previous background in strategic sourcing, engineering interfaces, commercial issues, vendor negotiations and vetting.

Knowledgeable in areas of cost reduction opportunities and overall supplier management.

Hands-on experience is a must.

Professional and positive communication skills.

Previous internship and/or project experience is a plus.
