Sensory and Consumer Insights Manager

The individual in this role will be responsible for managing the Tastepoint Sensory & Consumer Insights team. He/she will ensure that activities and projects are aligned with business opportunities and corporate strategies and that the team conveys the flavor wants/needs of the consumer to internal and external customers by providing meaningful recommendations for next steps. The person in this role represents the voice of the consumer within Tastepoint and helps to drive sales by developing research designs to meet the needs of customers and delight consumers.

Overall function include, to provide valid and reliable information to customers and Tastepoint product developers (flavorists and applications food technologists) relating to sensory evaluation. This department is responsible for supporting product development projects through difference testing, descriptive profiling, and small-scale consumer research.

Responsibilities include conducting sensory panels to support key project opportunities, collecting test data in a computerized format for statistical analysis, interpreting and communicating test results from difference, consumer and descriptive evaluations, and maintaining updated records of sensory testing.

Responsibilities also include coordinating with IFF’s Sensory and Consumer Insights department to leverage the research and project work done in the past in order to efficiently manage all resources in the department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Act as the thought leader and technical expert related to sensory and consumer testing.

Using expert problem solving skills, guide the SCI team on how to match existing methods to the needs of customer briefs or help them to develop customized methods to ensure new wins and sales growth.

Partner and collaborate with cross functional teams by seeking input from others and leveraging communication and influencing skills to provide a thoughtful and holistic perspective as well as provide sensory/consumer guidance to support the goals of various projects.

Provide training to marketing and sales to ensure that key insights and new SCI methods are understood and can be effectively leveraged to secure customer briefs as well as promote SCI capabilities to both Account Managers and directly to customers whenever needed.

Manage various positions in the department (including but not limited to SCI Researcher and Sensory Technician) and assist in their career development through mentoring and coaching.

Lead internal descriptive panels (conduct training, design tests, analyze and report findings).

Oversee Analyst in planning/running of Market Product Testing.

Oversee all testing conducted within the department (difference, descriptive, small-scale consumer) to ensure the appropriate method and analyses are being employed.

As needed, utilize Compusense® data collection software to create test ballots.

Analyze and interpret sensory and consumer data using multivariate techniques while coaching Analyst.

Develop relationships with IFF local and global partners and support their sensory testing needs where applicable.

Conduct proactive research that provides meaningful information to our customer base to support the sales force with differentiating tools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

A manufacturing facility, working in the R&D Technical area.

Office/lab/pilot plant environment.

Due to sensitivity of work environment, refraining from smoking is required during working hours.

Required Experience

BS in Food Science, Sensory Science, Psychology, or related behavioral Sciences.

Minimum 5-7 years recent sensory experience (food/beverage preferred.)

Strong interest in sensory evaluation and measuring perception

Basic Lab skills.

Experience giving presentations

Working knowledge of Sensory Evaluation Test Design (Discrimination, affective and descriptive analysis techniques)

Descriptive Analysis Experience (leading panels, experimental design, etc.)

Familiar with the principles of experimental design and data analysis
