General Accountability:

The incumbent assists the Director, Derivatives Valuation and Analytics in managing several derivative strategies, as well as being accountable for the design, development, implementation and execution of a best-practices Derivatives Middle Office infrastructure in support of Manulife’s derivative trading operations.

The Senior Analyst, Derivatives Valuation and Analytics develops and implements processes to ensure that all components of the derivatives life cycle operations are tracked, accounted for, valued and reported in a timely and accurate manner consistent with approved policies and strategies. All activities are coordinated with Securities Operations, Investment Controllers Group, Market Risk Management, Treasury and the Front Office.

The Senior Analyst, Derivatives Valuation and Analytics will exercise sound business judgment in the monitoring of key risks, the development and implementation of reporting tools, and building team capabilities. The Senior Analyst, Derivatives Valuation and Analytics is expected to represent Global Derivatives Services to external partners (Broker / Dealers, exchanges, regulatory bodies, etc) as well as to internal clients. . The primary clients for the reports and activities of this group are the CFO Investments Division, the CIO Investments Division, the SVP Global Investment Strategy, Global ALCO, the Derivatives Risk Oversight Committee, Corporate Risk Management, and the EVP Canadian and EVP US Investments.


Derivatives performance oversight, analysis and operations including working closely with the Front Office, Back Office, Market Risk Management, Treasury, Derivatives Operations, Investment Controllers, Investment Systems and other internal stakeholders to accomplish the following:

o Ensure that appropriate GDS infrastructure and processes exist to manage performance reporting, effectiveness testing and analysis.

o Ensure that the daily pricing processes for derivatives are accurate and reasonable - checking the daily comparisons of market valuation data with prior day’s data and other vendor sources.

o Ensure that the infrastructure to assess the integrity of intra-book and off-market transactions is robust, consistent with market movements and market pricing and convention.

o Monitor compliance with policies, guidelines, and limits; report violations to the Director, Derivatives Valuation and Analytics for discussion and resolution with the concerned party.

o Automate and improve creation and efficiency of internal reporting

Participate in the development and implementation of operations policies and procedures to ensure effective hedge management of approved derivatives products and, where applicable, one-off policies governing non-standard derivatives structures.

Support the development and implementation of a daily derivatives profit and loss (P&L) and market risk reporting infrastructure providing explicit direction in the development phase.

Work with peers in other departments in the roll-out of new derivatives products in support of business objectives.

Continuously evaluate, recommend and develop practices and controls that increase process efficiency and/or the quality of the operations and mitigate financial and operational risks.

Ensure documentation is up to date, complete and comprehensive for the procedures and processes under the incumbent’s sphere of responsibility.

Facilitate ad-hoc requests relating to derivative transactions and new product development.

Maintain knowledge of industry developments and trends to ensure Manulife maintains a world class derivatives function.


Relevant undergraduate education or advanced degree – Math, Finance, Economics, MBA, etc.

Professional designation - CA, CMA, CGA,CSI, CFA and/or FRM would be an asset

Minimum 3 years of in-depth knowledge and direct Derivatives Valuation/Middle Office operations experience.

Management of operations issues pertaining to derivatives including ISDA enabling Counterparty Swap Agreements and ISDA Credit Support Annexes (CSA), derivatives/portfolio accounting, custodian/clearing broker operations and associated reconciliations.

Understanding of ISDA documentation

Excellent analytical skills and the ability to think through problems, assess a variety of factors and recommend solutions

Good working knowledge of MS Office, Excel, SQL, Bloomberg OMS, and an understanding of database management

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and a high degree of professionalism combined with the ability to readily adapt to rapidly changing investment business and technology environments

Good communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated experience building and retaining solid working relationships internally and externally

Team player, with proven leadership skills, who enjoys high performance culture

Comfortable and flexible with constantly evolving and changing priorities and are open to new challenges


A need for accurate and timely analysis of derivatives transactions and hedge program oversight

Succession planning in a tight labor market for this specialty skill.

Considerable pressures in meeting daily, monthly and quarter end and annual deadlines
