The Diabetes and Complications Therapeutic Area (DCTA) at Lilly is looking for a Research Scientist – Islet Biology, who can play a key role in developing novel therapeutics that halt or revert progression of diabetes. You will establish a

state-of-the art

research laboratory focused on pancreatic beta cell biology, with emphasis on islet cell development,

differentiation

and function. You should have strong knowledge and technical skills in the field of Diabetes,

Metabolism

and Islet Biology with

particular

focus on the molecular mechanisms regulating islet cell development, differentiation and function. You will have the chance to define and progress projects from target identification to proof-of-concept testing in man, working collaboratively with scientists in the DCTA and with internal and external partners. Potential

opportunities in

this role include:

Discover, validate and advance novel molecular targets to address beta cell dysfunction in Diabetes.

Design, conduct and lead studies in preclinical animal models, isolated pancreatic

islets

and cultured cells, aligning resources to meet short- and long-term goals.

Supervision of the islet morphometry platform and/or significant strategic and project leadership.

Provide preclinical biology leadership on cross-functional project teams by partnering in a team-driven approach to expeditiously tackle challenges and advance projects.

Advance molecular understanding of the mechanisms of the beta cell failure through research and collaborations with team colleagues and academic investigators.

Maintain scientific expertise and presence in the external scientific community through publication, collaborations, and presentations in the areas of diabetes and metabolic disease.

Basic Qualifications

Ph.D. with at least 2 years of relevant post-doc or work experience

In-depth expertise in diabetes pathophysiology and pancreatic beta cell biology highly preferred.

Additional Skills/Preferences

Proficiency in islet isolation and culture, analysis of beta cell differentiation, proliferation and death both ex vivo and in vitro, routine molecular biology and biochemical techniques, and in vivo animal models of diabetes.

Experience with imaging highly desirable.

Proven track record of scientific accomplishments as evidenced by high impact publications.

Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups while advancing

project

and strategic goals.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Previous supervisory experience and expertise in drug discovery a plus.
