Overview
Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the quality control lab. Leads and manages all activities to ensure safe lab operations, effective planning, and regulatory compliance in the testing and analyzing of various chemical products maintaining high standards for product quality and responsiveness to customer needs and production requirements. Responsible for optimizing cross-functional support within responsibility area including Maintenance, Engineering and Technical resources. Plays a key leadership role in effort to continuously improve operations in both area of responsibility and site-wide. Accountable for all standard product testing and the support of quality program compliance. Responsible for managing the Bessemer City Quality Management systems, building quality into the manufacturing and service processes across the site, driving continuous improvement in product quality, preventive and corrective actions, and quality processes across the entire site. Responsible for ensuring plant maintains all requirements for Quality Programs including but not limited to ISO, cGMP(FDA), and NSF. Is a member of the Bessemer City Plant Management Team.  
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Oversee the Bessemer City Quality Manual and associated quality systems across the site. Ensure site continues to maintain systems in order to sustain ISO registration, NSF registration, and cGMP/FDA compliance. Serve as the Management Team representative for the site ISO system. Support continuous improvement in product/process/customer quality requirements and performance indicators by serving as a Root Cause Analysis leader, Six Sigma quality leader, and Lean Manufacturing leader. Align efforts with the Lithium Division Global Quality Assurance Manager.
 
EHS

Responsible to lead safety efforts in his/her safety team, develops programs and systems to promote a Safety Culture at the Site, sponsors safety activities Area and plant-wide, is seen as a leader in safety plant-wide.
Drive KPI Measurement, Root Cause Analysis, Lessons Learned and Continuous Improvement of the QC/QA area and across the entire site.
Leads and participates in formal incident investigations identifying root causes, tracks the appropriate corrective actions, and ensures implementation to improve safety and environmental performance in the area.
Audits conformance to safety standards
Ensure area is in compliance for all regulatory and process training.
Approve MOC and communicate changes.
Member of the Technology Safety Committee and Corporate Laboratory Safety Team.
Serves as site contact/coordinator for regulatory inspections/visits (cGMP, FDA, NSF, etc\u2026)
Serve as Quality Assurance representative for applicable Management of Change risk assessments and approvals
Promotes a strong belief that all jobs must be performed safely and that no job is worth doing that would risk the health, safety, or welfare of the plant employees, contractors, or communit

Business Support

Maintain an effective area management system (ECS) to drive daily and weekly area performance
Responsible to interface with others in various parts of the organization to ensure existing and future customer requirements are met. These include Operations, Supply Chain, Sales and Marketing, R&D, Quality Assurance, Transportation, Accounting and other FMC sites.
Maintain work and capacity standards to support planning and scheduling of area activities
Responsible for establishing lab testing priorities to support production effectively
Maintain calibration and standardization of lab equipment
Maintain accountability for lab testing standards
Responsible to be a subject matter expert for lab equipment, practices, and methods
Accountable for transfer new and improved lab methods in QC and production labs
Responsible for adhering to the quality programs, including ISO, NSF and cGMP
Interfaces with others in the organization to ensure internal and external customer deadlines and requirements are met.
Ensures appropriate involvement in quality management systems at all levels across the site.
Effectively challenge all levels of the site organization to drive continuous quality improvement
Provide quality assurance guidance and support for quality control activities such as Gauge R&R, SQC, SPC, etc\u2026
Interface with Lithium Division Regulatory Department to sustain required knowledge of regulations/requirements for cGMP, FDA, NSF, etc.

People

Develop and direct QC employees in a proactive manner by fostering both individual employee contributions and development and cooperative teamwork, motivating toward total quality performance and exercising effective communication.
Builds a strong and effective Quality Assurance team with clear delegation of responsibilities and tasks.
Responsible to be a member of the plant\u2019s management team, will lead and direct all direct reports with plant priorities and direction.
Responsible for work shift scheduling
Responsible to lead the building of strong and effective teams within the department.
Actively engage in the development of junior professionals; serve as a mentoring resource for the plant.
Carry out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
Responsible for overall recruiting process in the area which includes interviewing, hiring, and training employees.
Responsible to formally appraise the performance and behavior of direct reports and provides appropriate feedback, is actively engaged in the development of junior peers, serves as a mentoring resource for the plant.
Responsible for planning, assigning, and directing work of direct reports and in some cases their direct reports.
Responsible for recognizing the need to reward employees.
Responsible to addressing complaints, resolving problems and in some cases discipline employees
Lead change/quality improvements/build quality into all processes in all levels of the organization, impacting/influencing/directing employees outside the departments direct reporting relationships

Financial

Forecasts and controls expenses, and implements plans to ensure commitments on budget, cost and schedule are met
Responsible for championing optimization of lab testing costs
Utilize Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing tools and methods to identify variation, waste, and cost savings ideas, and to facilitate plant teams to apply the tools effectively to capture the savings and eliminate the waste.
Responsible to confer with management personnel to establish develop budget and cost controls, and to establish quality control standards.

Required Education
Education and/or Experience: BA/BS in Chemistry or related technical degree with 7 to 10 years professional experience in an analytical laboratory including supervisory experience.   Six Sigma Black Belt certification and demonstrated success leading Green Belts to deliver effective quality improvement projects. Lean Manufacturing certification and demonstrated success leading Kaizens to eliminate waste in operations.
 
Skills: Extensive working knowledge of chemical manufacturing, applicable quality control equipment and methods, chemical hygiene, human resources practices, quality assurance practices, and environmental management. Proven ability to lead change not only in own department, but throughout an entire site organization. Experience Business software systems (SAP); MS Office, MiniTab, LQM, Six Sigma principles, and Lean Manufacturing principles. Knowledge of advanced analytical skills and statistics with advanced computer skills. Extensive experience with and knowledge of ISO 9001, cGMP laboratory practices, and internal quality system auditing. Must have good written and oral communication skills and proven ability to lead the team, train and problem solve. Excellent interpersonal skills required.
