The Project Scientist has the responsibility for commercializing new or existing coatings technology to support the revenue growth and objectives of the corporation. Working as part of a large, technical group, the Project Scientist will spend time working with other chemists, planning directions for research, assembling self directed teams, and meeting with business managers. In addition, the Project Scientist will also work on products from concept through completion, including formulation, raw material evaluation, testing (including bench work and reporting results), and product scale up.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Lead and execute projects for consumer and industrial coatings.

Use sound data-based decision processes to draw conclusions from test results and provide input to the rest of the project team, on appropriate next steps on projects.

Use the appropriate balance of theoretical and practical knowledge to accelerate the development and commercialization of consumer and industrial coatings.

Develop new test methods as necessary to accelerate the development and commercialization of new products.

Demonstrate leadership in the industry.

Provide progress updates through the regular issuance of written and verbal reports.

Work seamlessly as a member of cross-functional project teams.

Provide training to Rust-Oleum marketing and field personnel, agents and customers.

Maintain records of experiments, results and conclusions.

Required Skills

Masters degree in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Science/Engineering, or a comparable scientific technical field. PhD preferred.

5 years hands on coating formulation development and application experience in an industrial environment.

Familiarity with waterborne and solvent borne coating formulations, along with coating testing and result evaluations.

Broad and deep understanding of the consumer and industrial coatings market, including the following:

- Current suppliers, coatings customers, and end users

- Superior knowledge of industry test methods and their significance

- Understanding of competitive capabilities

Proven track record of generation of new knowledge, products, or procedures, to meet the business needs of Rust-Oleum Corporation.

Familiarity with formulated product lab scale up to commercial production.

Proven ability to use fundamental polymer properties to predict end-use performance.

Demonstrated portfolio experience.

Demonstrated use of Design of Experiments.

Demonstrated excellent communication skills and leadership to facilitate commercialization of lab formulations.

Ability to work as an individual contributor effectively managing goals, time frames, and meeting deadlines.

Ability to travel approximately 10% of time, domestically and internationally, to fulfill responsibilities of the position.

Ability to work safely in Rust-Oleum Corporation laboratories, manufacturing, and customer facilities.

Self-starter, highly motivated toward achievements, results oriented.

Strong project management skills.

Solid record keeping skills.

Solid verbal and written communication skills.

Strong PC skills, including MS Office.

Additional Consideration Given to Those With:

Demonstrated team leading and training experience.

Knowledge of aerosol technology.
