This hourly position requires flexibility with weekends, overtime and shift work. Shift times will be 2:00PM to 10:00PM. This position reports into the site manager in Southfield, MI as part of the Premedia Technologies group. The Premedia Technologies group provides prepress services primarily to the retail, catalog, and direct mail markets. This particular location focuses on the Automotive Industry and provides Catalog, Ad and Direct Mail pieces. The Production Layout Artist must thrive in a professional, fast-paced environment, juggling multiple projects within a corporate setting. The production layout artist is responsible for building pages in InDesign for final printing. Individual must have strong typesetting and layout skills. Specifically candidate must have strong knowledge of type kerning, leading, spacing, formatting, and working knowledge of font systems. Must have strong InDesign skills, specifically style sheets, how to interpret client style guides, and how to setup files properly for final output.

Position requires a thorough knowledge of printing, including: all print requirements for 4color printing; overprint and knockout requirements; ink trapping; setting up and creating spot colors; creating varnishes and other treatments (die-cutting, UV, foil-stamping, embossing, etc.).


Receive files from Client’s creative agency and ensure the file is technically correct and is consistent in application of styles and colors.

Follow documented processes for use of layers, color names and placed artwork.

Processing of content changes in pages from customer as well as proofreading marks, adhering to customer style and brand guidelines with minimum to no errors.

Finesse layout due to content changes provided to be aesthetically pleasing, while following style and brand guidelines.

Utilize work in process system to ensure proper file management and linkage of graphics within document.

Takes ownership, leads initiatives and successfully executes through all stages of production development.

Operates as subject manner expert for creation of final files for printing.

Understands the client’s needs and methodology.

Manage job status and hourly tracking through RRD technology tools.

Adhere to RRD Policies and Standard Operating Procedures.

Utilize all RRD hardware and software technology as needed.

Interact with Customer or Account Manager as needed regarding customer requirements and expectations.

Communicates effectively.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

3 years of experience in InDesign. Should have experience level that is better than average or expert.

3 years experience working in PDF workflow, including creation of final high resolution print ready PDF’s.

5 years of experience building or constructing pages in InDesign.

5 years experience in printing and knowledge of printing – digital, web, and offset printing. Including knowledge of press impositions; bindery; varnishes and UV;

Average knowledge of Photoshop. Including color profiles; creating silo paths; and color manipulation.

Must have Average to Expert knowledge of Macintosh Platform.

Excellent organization skills.

Attention to detail.

Good communication skills in a team environment.

Understanding of layout and complex printing requirements.

Must be able to work in a fast paced environment that requires flexibility

Must possess the ability to produce independently in a team environment.

Ability to identify inconsistencies in any given publication or document.
