TASKS/SERVICES: The contractor shall:\r
(1) Perform initial reviews of new manuscripts submitted to the journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) concerning toxicological, experimental, and other research relevant to environmental health; collaborate with the Editor in Chief (EIC) or Scientific Editor (SE)\r
(2) Evaluate whether new manuscripts meet EHP\u2019s expectations for overall scientific quality, relevance to environmental health science, originality, and potential to contribute new or important information to the field, and, based on this assessment, make recommendations to the EIC or SE about whether the manuscript should undergo peer review, or be rejected without peer review.\r
(3) Prepare notification emails to authors of papers being rejected without review, including providing suggestions for alternative journals or other guidance to authors as appropriate.\r
(4) Identify and invite appropriate Associate Editors to manage manuscripts selected for peer review.\r
(5) Evaluate recommendations and comments from peer reviewers and Associate Editors and make recommendations to the EIC or SE about whether manuscripts should be rejected, sent back to authors for revisions, or accepted.\r
(6) Upon request by the EIC or SE, and in collaboration with the Editorial Support Contractor, provide comments and requests to authors regarding revisions needed to meet EHP expectations or requirements that have not been identified by peer reviewers or Associate Editors.\r
(7) Evaluate manuscripts that are recommended for acceptance by an Associate Editor and advise the EIC or SE regarding the need for an internal final review or evaluation by the Editorial Support Contractor; collaborate with the Editorial Support Contractor to prepare requests for additional revisions prior to final acceptance.\r
(8) Collaborate with the EIC or SE to oversee the peer review process for selected manuscripts, including inviting reviewers, evaluating reviews, providing additional feedback to authors, and making recommendations to the EIC or SE about whether manuscripts should be rejected, sent back to authors for revisions, or accepted.\r
(9) Collaborate with EHP Associate Editors on the peer review process, including use of the Editorial Manager tracking system, identifying reviewers, and other technical concerns, and act as an intermediate between Associate Editors and the EIC and SE regarding questions about substantive issues, reviews or manuscript decisions.\r
(10) Monitor the performance of EHP Associate Editors and Editorial Review Board members, including timeliness, the quality of reviews and comments provided to authors, and availability; provide feedback to the EIC regarding performance issues or the need for additional expertise in specific topic areas; identify potential candidates for Associate Editor and Editorial Review Board positions upon request by the EIC.\r
(11) Stay informed regarding new or emerging methods and trends in environmental health research and publishing; provide feedback and information to the EIC and other staff on technical and substantive issues; and make recommendations for updating EHP guidelines and requirements as appropriate.\r
(12) Perform internal reviews and provide feedback on EHP News articles, author guidelines, webpages, Editorial Manager templates and documentation, and other EHP-related material, as requested by the EIC or SE. \u00a0\u00a0\r
REQUIREMENTS: The contractor ideally would have:\r
(1) Ph.D. in Toxicology or a related scientific discipline;\r
(2) Minimum of three (3) years of related experience.\r
(3) Knowledge and expertise to evaluate manuscripts concerning toxicological or experimental and other research relevant to environmental health, consistent with academic training and research experience in toxicology.\r
(4) Prior experience with scientific/scholarly publishing as an author or coauthor of research manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals, and as a peer reviewer or editor of a journal that publishes peer-reviewed research, including use of a manuscript submission and tracking system (e.g., Editorial Manager, ScholarOne.)\r
(5) Familiarity with current experimental research methods and theory relevant to environmental health, and with statistical methods used in experimental research.\r
(6) Familiarity with standard elements of a research manuscript, including abstracts; introduction, methods, results, and discussion sections; citations and references; tables and figures, and with contemporary reporting guidelines for scholarly journals.\r
(7) Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and email clients such as Microsoft Outlook.\r
(8) Familiarity with PubMed and PubMed Central.\r
(9) Familiarity with ethical issues relevant to scholarly publishing, including authorship, competing financial interests, human and animal subjects requirements, duplicate publication and plagiarism.\r
(10) Excellent written and verbal communication skills.\r
(11) Strong analytical, organizational and time management skills.\r
