Department/District/Project Description

Kiewit Business Services (KBS) is a cross-functional shared service organization that provides the business units with customer-specific services focused on cost and business value. Our services include non-core, yet essential, functions of our businesses including accounts payable, accounts receivable, change control, human capital management, payroll, project initiation, compliance and continuous improvement.

Payroll Processing is part of the Kiewit Business Services Payroll Services area.

Position Description

The Payroll Processing Manager is responsible for hiring and developing a highly engaged team of Payroll Processing and Master Data Specialists/Analysts who provide efficient, high quality support and outstanding customer service to all areas of the Kiewit organization.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities

Hire and develop new employees, provide appropriate input and recommendations on development, and initiate disciplinary actions when necessary

Provide feedback and encourage learning by team members; create growth opportunities for others, transfer knowledge to others and challenge them to develop their own solutions

Articulate clear performance goals and provide frequent performance measurement feedback

Establish priorities, allocate time to maximize benefits, and manage team resources to ensure the highest level of productivity and accuracy

Make clear assignments to team; empower others by extending responsibility and authority; provide timely feedback and follow-up

Develop and set a clear and compelling vision for the future, creatively consider alternative strategies to achieve future goals

Hold team and others accountable for expected quality and accuracy within the payroll process

Pro-actively seek opportunities for continuous improvement within the department and act upon findings to initiate improvements, presenting ideas in a persuasive way to gain support

Make timely decisions with well-developed judgement, while considering alternatives, risks and other critical decision factors

Is responsible for leading day-to-day operations of the department for team members and customers

Provide excellent customer service to all internal and external Kiewit departments; understand Kiewit’s core business and promote a sense of urgency toward business critical issues

Monitor individual and team performance metrics to ensure goal attainment

Ensure procedures and controls are properly followed

Collaborate with internal and external customers to promote excellence within the department

Identify situations where activity is occurring outside of standard company policy and communicate these situations to the appropriate management level for follow up

Anticipate and mediate conflict between individuals and groups; find a common ground and obtain cooperation

Reliable and consistent attendance

Secondary Responsibilities

Support and participate in collaboration activities to promote and implement continuous process improvement

Support and review security risk including segregation of duties

Perform other job-specific tasks as needed or assigned

Required Qualifications

5-7 years of accounting / business experience, preferably in Payroll

Experience should include at least 3 years of proven supervisor responsibilities demonstrating excellent team leadership, communication and customer service for 7 direct reports

Excellent analytical, critical thinking and organizational skills

Strong verbal and written communication skills, with proven ability to present information accurately, concisely and in a professional manner

Ability to make decisions and plans based on the vision, direction and long-term strategy of the organization, as well as experience in implementing strategies and of defining and establishing procedures

Demonstrated initiative with commitment and ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines while still maintaining high quality standards

Ability to motivate and coach individuals to develop their skills enabling them to achieve their best and to contribute to the overall success of the team and KBS

Ability to anticipate and identify the root cause of problems, seek and consider alternative solutions, collaborate with others as needed to gain support and implement lasting change

Ability to research, recommend and implement process improvements/enhancements to increase efficiencies within the department

Effectively prepares and presents topics of the workgroup (meetings, training sessions, etc.); generates interest and holds the attention of the intended audience

Ability to effectively manage a large team that is customer service and productivity oriented

Able to work extended hours as required meeting the demands of the organization

Ability to work under minimal supervision, to initiate and prioritize multiple projects, and to complete a variety of work assignments within structured deadlines

Proficient in Microsoft Office applications

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business

Previous SAP payroll experience

Previous Payroll experience

Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC)

Experience with Union payroll

Experience managing the payroll process for 10,000 employees

Experience with international payroll

Work Environment

Shared Service Center – Professional office setting

Physical Requirements

Travel as needed

Lifting, sitting, stooping, bending, reaching, climbing stairs, etc.

Reading from a computer or laptop monitor for several hours including fonts of various sizes from a variety of sources
