The Operational Strategy & Performance Department is tasked with the responsibility of monitoring, reporting, forecasting and analyzing operational performance of Southwest Airlines and providing clear understanding of Reliability, Productivity, Hospitality and Cost. Additionally, this Department provides strategic vision and project support for initiatives that directly impact the operational performance of the Company.

If selected for the position, you will support one of the following Teams:

Strategy & Analytics

The Strategy & Analytics Team promote and support collaboration of Strategies, Planning and Analytics between all Operational Teams across the Business. They arm decision-makers across the company with analysis and support to inform future decisions in regards to planning and execution of projects and initiatives. The overall function focuses on continuous improvements in the operational processes across the airline with a focus on and balance between cost savings and reliability improvement.

Some of the projects and responsibilities you may work on in this role include:

Process documentation, including recommending and developing ideas for improvement

Project analysis – gather/analyze data and provide recommended actions to be taken on larger company wide cost initiatives

Project support – gathering stakeholder information, preparing documentation and preparing presentations

Risk mitigation and lessons learned research, including the development of hypothesis for future solves and improvement

Application of data analytics, visualization of data using tools such as Excel or Tableau and summarization and communication of findings to relevant audience

Simulation & Forecasting

The Simulation & Forecasting Team is responsible improving the operational performance of our network through thought leadership utilizing measurement, prediction and planning.

We focus on building tools and processes to help the company predict future operational performance of flight schedules. This is accomplished through simulation, forecasting, measurement and prediction.

Some of the projects and responsibilities you may work on in this role include:

Application of data analytics, statistics and predictive modeling in order to understand operational impacts of proposed business decisions

Assist in development of monthly on-time performance forecast

Learn and run scenarios in the current schedule simulation model

Create visualizations of data outputs using tools such as Excel or Tableau

Communicate findings or recommendations to audiences with minimal understanding



High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.

Must be at least 18 years of age

Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986


Major/Minor in Business, Finance

, Economics, Engineering

, Computer Science

, Data Analytics/Data Science

, or Operations Research

Coursework Preferred: Data Analytics/Statistics

, Operations Management

Minimum Junior level

To be eligible must be currently enrolled as a full time student (minimum 12 credit hours)

Maintained 2.75 or above cumulative GPA


Understanding of airline operations preferred

Self-starter with a drive for process improvement and innovation is preferred

Strong use of PowerPoint and Excel required (Pivot Tables, Modeling, etc.)

Quick learner, self-motivated, team oriented

Problem solving ability and strong written/verbal communication skills

Experience using some of the following tools: SQL, Terdata/MySQL, @Risk, R, SAS, SPSS, MATLAB preferred
