Occupational Safety Programs Intern - Fall 2018

The Safety & Security Department works to foster and support a Safety and Security Culture that identifies risks to the operation and workplace and proactively deals with these issues before they become injuries, accidents or incidents.
The Occupational Safety Programs Intern will regularly interact with various teams including Safety Programs, Hazardous Materials, Safety Investigations, and Internal Evaluation Program and workers compensation.
Some of the projects and tasks that the Intern may assist with include, but are not limited to:

Writing Safety programs that align with applicable regulations and standards (OSHA, NFPA, FDA etc.)
Quality Assurance audits throughout the system
Research regulations and interpretations and apply them to the Southwest programs, policies and procedures
Create Safety and Security-related communication pieces to be distributed companywide
Perform gap analyses between current programs and new or updated regulations or standards
Investigating and responding to Letters of Investigation
Support a wide variety of Safety and Security programs; including airport security, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, fall protection, fire safety, electrical safety, chemical management, communicable disease, and Hazardous Materials programs
Assist with the Southwest human factors program
Interface with all other departments and working groups on various projects and issues
Other projects and tasks as assigned

High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

Must be enrolled as a full time student (minimum 12 credit hours for undergraduates) when application is submitted
Minimum sophomore level
Maintained 2.75 or above cumulative GPA

Progress towards a Bachelor\u2019s or Master\u2019s degree with a major in Occupational Safety, Safety Sciences, Aviation Safety, Human Factors, or related field required



Participation in industry related organizations and clubs preferred
Project management experience preferred
Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint
Related Safety or Security experience preferred (i.e. previous internship or work experience)
Knowledge or experience with aviation operations preferred
Technical writing preferred


Must meet confidentiality expectations as to confidential, proprietary, and sensitive company information
Excellent communication skills and attention to details required
Familiarity with government regulations preferred
Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
Ability to work well with others as part of a Team
