Mechanical Engineer

Microsoft Hardware is continuing to develop exciting consumer electronic devices. We are a growing team developing ground-breaking hardware, software and experiences across computer vision, machine learning, human-computer interaction, image and video processing. We are looking for an entry-level mechanical engineer with an interest in cameras and inertial motion sensing to work on the HoloLens sensor design team.

Job Description:

Create 2D detailed part and assembly drawings using best practice specification call-outs in understandable and achievable requirements.

Capture complex 3D design intent in geometries that represent various process capabilities.

Use CAD database management tools, including procedures for check-in, check-out, revision control, family parts, file naming, and back-ups.

Assist in designing and executing functional test plans, including design and specification of test apparatus components, characterization of test capabilities and limitations, and execution of testing.

Assist in assembly of prototypes and fixtures, including CNC machining, soldering, press-fitting, etc.

Follow industry standard manufacturing processes and their associated tolerances, costs, material selections, life-cycles, and lead-times.

Develop existing data analysis capabilities to be able to process part measurement or performance data with Cpk, Ppk, and run-charts, be able to analyze DOE results and conduct Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) tests and conduct and interpret Guage R & R results.

Develop existing simulation analysis capabilities, being able to properly build and run finite element and finite difference and models with appropriate boundary conditions to simulate stress and thermal performance.

Develop understanding of part design and feature limitations associated with molding slides, pull directions, gate locations, ejector pin locations, and draft angles.

Develop ability to design custom parts and assemblies with best practice methods of meeting requirements of optical and electrical components.

Basic Qualifications:

- BSME or higher

Preferred Qualifications:

- As this is an entry-level position, we expect these skills to grow in the job.

- Some experience with ME CAD tools.

- Some experience with Finite Element Analysis.

- Ability to assemble of prototypes and fixtures, including CNC machining, soldering, press-fitting, Etc.

- Familiarity with basic camera concepts like depth of field, focal length, geometric distortion, MTF.

- Ability to work with cross-functional team members to meet their internal customer requirements while communicating limitations and needs of the mechanical design in a cooperative, easy to understand, and accurate manner.

- Strong lab skills in validation and data processing of mechanical tests and develop test tools

- Willing to travel up to 20%
