Job Summary

The iPod/iPhone Manufacturing Process Development Engineer will support the product development by driving the development of one of the key process development focus areas across iPod and iPhone. This role is regarded as a hands-on technical expert. In this highly visible role, you will have direct frequent communication and collaboration with Apple Industrial Design, Product Design, Manufacturing Design and worldwide suppliers.

Key Qualifications

Process Development Focus Areas:* Surface Finishing - Develop new processes are the area of blasting, tumbling, polishing, lapping, anodizing etc. * Glass Processing - Develop new processes for glass scribe/break, CNC grinding, lapping, chemical strengthening, ink decoration, PVD coatings etc.* Automation - Develop new automation across iPod/iPhone manufacturing. Identify automation opportunities and justify automation projects, identify world-class automation integrators, define automation project scope and deliverables, support the qualification of equipment at suppliers. * CNC machining - Develop all CNC milling and turing processes. Scope appropriate CNC equipment to be used, develop CNC fixtures, implement touch probing, own the reduction of cycle time, development of advanced cutters and coatings, High Speed Machining implementation, support the programming and optimization of all CNC-related activities at contract manufacturers worldwide. * Painting - Develop all paint processes to achieve cosmetic and surface durability requirements. Scope and specify paint equipment, environmental clean room requirements, evaluate and select most appropriate paints and painting parameters to ensure quality and yield requirements are met.


Lead Process Development one of the Process Development Focus areas above.

Be a self-starter by defining all engineering tasks to meet project objectives and have the ability to quickly learn about new processes with very little information provided.

Define world-class processes to meet all Apple design and operational requirements.

Identify, research, develop, and qualify world-class equipment manufacturers and suppliers.

Define part tolerance and specifications by demonstrating process capability to Product Designers and Industrial Designers.

Develop and document processes including all parameters, consumables and secondary operation requirements to meet defined specifications.

Work with applicable Global Supply Managers to define and establish supply chain requirements utilizing selected equipment and manufacturing suppliers.

Provide onsite support at manufacturing sites during development and product production ramp, and drive engineering issues to resolution

Support Supply Base Engineers on application-specific developments and issues


BS or higher degree in mechanical, manufacturing or industrial engineering preferred.

Experience: 2-10 years of full time mechanical manufacturing experience required

Must have a demonstrated hands-on mechanical ability. Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills. Domestic and International travel required. Experience with highly cosmetic parts a plus. Experience in a manufacturing environment of consumer electronics or consumer plastic / sheet metal products a plus.
