Primary Role

Responsible for supporting a comprehensive array of external communication activities related to enhancing the image and brand of American Water. Also responsible for assisting in developing internal communications strategies and coordination of the communication of key corporate messages that are aligned with and mutually reinforce American Water’s strategic goals, vision and strongly enhance the internal image with employees, prospective employees and other corporate stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

Drives the execution of comprehensive media relations strategy for assigned stakeholder groups, including the development of comprehensive communications strategies, campaigns, and initiatives targeting top-tier business and financial media, industry trade media and other outlets that work to reinforce and enhance the company's brand. 

Provides assistance and support to external affairs team, business units and internal communications; proactively develops crisis communications activities; Co-manages merger and acquisition communications including media activities as well as investor/analyst activities.

Identifies opportunities for corporate sponsorships to supplement executive outreach program and actively manages activities to ensure maximum participation and supports speech writing

Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with target media outlets, enhancing the image and brand of American Water and expertise.

Work with public relations agency to identify media opportunities and develop, pitch, and secure earned media in local, regional, national and industry trade media.

Manages the development of integrated internal communication plans and distribution of company-wide organizational communications to support assigned stakeholder groups.

Writes, coordinates, and produces internal news and develops copy for internal media including newsletters, email, intranet and SpashTV.

Assists in building communication capabilities for line managers and employees by helping to develop strategies, tactics and timetables to ensure that the regions and corporate have the tools and information to communicate consistent information in a timely manner across the entire business.

Supports the creation of materials and tactics to help educate customers on issues to increase satisfaction with American Water’s service.

Supports and interfaces with external communication team to effectively manage and leverage media coverage and manage critical issues. 

Monitor and report on media clips, social media metrics; analyze and communicate External Affairs results quarterly to Vice President of Communications & Federal Government Affairs.

Support special projects, events and/or initiatives as appropriate.

Knowledge / Skills

Ability to plan and manage large press and community events including development of talking points and corresponding media materials, inviting/pitching media and coaching management team.

Excellent ability to write, edit and express oneself verbally and in writing.

Ability to handle multiple tasks and produce quality materials while achieving results and meeting deadlines.

Self-confident with an understanding of human psychology, and an enthusiasm for motivating people with excellent relationship-building skills/savvy.

Strong influencing and persuasion skills with and ability to effectively communicate with diverse employee and community population.  Personal reputation for integrity, ethics and cross-cultural sensitivity

Ability to monitor internal/external business developments as well as identify connections between business activities, industry trends and associated threat or benefit to reputation.

Ability to develop comprehensive plans for public communications and internal communications, including corporate social responsibility and execute in a proactive manner.

Ability to interact and coach senior management.

Ability to effectively manage internal and external resources, i.e., agencies and budget.

Willingness to work as part of an integrated team which includes supporting regional EA teams as well as business units.  Strong ability to influence, analyze and solve problems.

Working knowledge of design and print concepts. Sense for design--Is visual---can match photos and words. Knows how to write to photos.

Understands and respects the history of the organization. Quick study on organization background. Keen sense of company culture and organizational nuances.

Editorial and production experience in print and electronic media.

Knowledge and experience using web technology as a communications vehicle and resource.

Comprehension of business, human resource and management issues.

Work Environment

Position is located at the corporate headquarters in Voorhees, NJ. 

Works with corporate team and interfaces extensively with the regional communications and external affairs team.
