Position Description

The Transportation Operations Manager leads transportation activities across the US including coordination of shipments for over 5000 origin/destination address combinations, carrier compliance and performance management for both internal and external customers across the U.S. market. The Transportation Operations Manager leads a team focused on managing a centralized and standardized set of transportation processes which provide the organization and customers with a common understanding of transportation and logistical capabilities.

Responsible for ensuring required levels of transportation services across Grainger shipment origin including: Supplier to Distribution Center/Branch/Customer

Carrier-Owned and Operated Cross-Dock Facilities

Market Specific Programs, i.e. Dedicated Delivery, etc.

Define carrier operational requirements for the U.S. market

Develop methods of ongoing carrier assessment. Continually monitor carrier performance, at both national and regional levels

Implement Supply Chain or Transportation Department cost or service improvement plans/process changes

Develop standard methods of communicating carrier operational performance to internal partners

Define and monitor performance expectations of third party freight management

Represent Transportation interests in high-level, cross-functional assignments

Collaborate regularly with Supply Chain leadership to ensure organizational objectives are supported with desired levels of carrier performance

Forecast future network operational needs and define the carrier requirements necessary to continually improve levels of customer service and reduce operational costs.

Establish and maintain strategic alliances with key internal and external stakeholders and senior management focused on total cost and service solutions.

Incorporate detailed understanding of business needs and transportation markets.

Lead creative thinking that fosters curiosity and drive change and innovation

Leads and participates in cross-functional projects to develop and implement short and long-term plans that increase customer service, deliver significant cost reduction, lower inventories and limit variability.

Identify and leverage opportunities for continuous improvement and manage financial risks

Accountable for staff direction and objectives, approve execution plans, and delegate tasks in order to deliver against business goals.

Responsible for all Talent Management activities to ensure employee assessments, coaching, development, and management, are performed on a consistent basis.
