Position Summary:

Lead formulation chemist managing innovation and development activities at PPG. Responsibilities include idea generation, planning, conducting experiments toward innovative technical solutions on existing or novel technology platforms supporting PPG’s organic growth strategy. Experience in coatings formulation, in particular waterborne formulations is a plus and open innovation is a critical part of this position.

CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Idea generation, plan, conduct and direct established and exploratory research for the development of new and innovative solutions

Responsibilities include identification of new technology opportunities through internal X-SBU activities, literature searches, technical scouting, and intellectual property review and third party open innovation partnering.

Meet regulatory requirements, address unmet market needs, or improve the efficiencies of existing products and processes.

Ability to read and interpret patents on new product concepts and technologies

Establish consistent interaction with product management and business leaders to maintain project alignment and resource allocation.

Ability to present technologies to internal and external customers is needed.

This is a leadership position potentially managing 1-2 technicians and/or research chemists but hands on work is expected for first 1-2 years.

Experience and Education Master’s Degree in chemistry/polymer science/material science/engineering and Chemical engineering At least 5 plus years of experience in relevant fields of research Preferred qualifications: PhD in a technical field such as chemistry/polymer science/material science/ chemical engineering or related. 1-2 years of coatings formulation experience is preferred, but not required. Previous experience in waterborne technologies is a plus

Functional and Technical Skills Ability to work independently or as part of a team. Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills. Ability to design and develop experiments based on statistical Sigma Logic principles. Leadership skills with good time management.
