Reporting to the Head of Insurance Strategy and ALM, the Investment Actuary will have a key role in enhancing the capabilities of both the LDI (Liability Driven Investing) and insurance asset management businesses of MIM.

Major Responsibilities

The Investment Actuary will be a key member of the LDI implementation team responsible for developing, recommending and assisting in implementing strategies to achieve the objectives of pension account clients. The role will be a resource for clients and the candidate should possess industry insights with the ability to partner with other teammates to credibly interface with the financial, investment and benefits contacts at potential clients, including the senior decision makers.

The role with be responsible for coordinating internally with the LDI portfolio management team, including the portfolio managers and the head of the derivatives team. The role will also work with the institutional sales team to communicate the investment process for pension accounts to potential clients.

A firm understanding of the underlying actuarial, accounting, and regulatory issues that drive investment management decision making will be important for success as will the ability to understand and model liabilities and to understand the optimal asset strategies to achieve client objectives.

The Investment Actuary will also be a key member of the insurance portfolio management team, responsible for providing value added ALM (Asset Liability Management) and risk management services to insurance clients. The role will assist in proving ALM services, such as peer analysis, asset allocation recommendations and assisting with cash flow testing and assistance with client’s rating agency interactions. The candidate will be expected to enhance our enterprise risk management tools and have the ability to perform risk analysis, such as stress testing and scenario analysis, VaR and other techniques on client portfolios.

Key duties

Provide insights into market and regulatory events occurring in the pension and insurance market places and their potential impact on client portfolios.

Assume ownership and responsibility for a variety of processes and models supporting the LDI and insurance asset management businesses. This includes:

Being able to critically review, develop and implement improvements and changes to existing efforts.

Designing, building and implementing investment / actuarial models as needed to support and inform the strategic investment decision process

Working collaboratively with others to research and probe key issues.

Effectively communicate strategies and positioning, both internally and externally, in support of the LDI and insurance asset management businesses.

Qualifications

The candidate selected for the role will possess a diverse set of skills including a strong insurance and capital markets background and experience working in the pension industry.

Fellow of the Society of Actuaries or Casualty Actuarial Society with specialization in investments or pensions

Minimum 7-10 years of experience in an insurance company or financial services setting

BA / BS required

MBA / CFA is preferred

Strong analytical and quantitative skills.

Strong background in fixed income and capital markets

Other requirements

Strong computer skills, superior ability to design and build efficient financial

Ability to work in both a team and an autonomous environment.

Ability to understand instructions and unfamiliar concepts quickly, work independently, take ownership of responsibilities and deliver results.

Ability to handle pressure and work with a sense of urgency to meet deadlines.
