Education / Licensure / Certification:



Graduate of RN Educational Program with BSN or BSN in progress to be completed within 4 years. Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or other health science related field is acceptable.


Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health or related field preferred



Current NC RN License if applicable; Certified in Infection Control or becomes certified within 3 years of entry into the profession and maintains certification without lapse.


RN license, Certification in Infection Control (CBIC)




A combination of experience and education may be considered


Two or more years in Infection Prevention preferred



Maintain a professional appearance, keep a positive attitude, maintain a safe and clean environment, communicate with courtesy, anticipate needs of the customers, maintain privacy and confidentiality.


Public Speaking experience, good problem solver, good computer skills


Sedentary Work:

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time) and/or; a negligible amount of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. sedentary criteria are met.

Respirator Fit Testing - Required


Hear and differentiate low volume sounds in order to make judgments regarding actions needed

Hear alarm bells, verbal conversations, telephone voices and normal volume sounds

Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)

Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)

Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships)

Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)

Job Description:


The Infection Prevention Specialist (IPS) is a system wide professional position involved in daily collaborative efforts within all facets of Cone Health. The IPS functions as a consultant, educator, role model, researcher and change agent along with Quality Improvement and Patient Safety.


Surveillance/Epidemiology: understands and reviews the system wide surveillance plan for services provided and populations served, uses standardized definitions to classify events and outcomes, reports significant findings to appropriate customers, conducts investigations using epidemiologic principles. 20 %

Infection Prevention and Control Practice: integrates surveillance with improvement plans, reviews and analyzes existing regulations, standards and guidelines, recommends revises practices based on evidence based strategies, integrates public health issues into practice. 20 %

Leadership: shares knowledge and skills with others, supports the importance of research, brings creativity and innovation to practice, seeks opportunities to influence, works collaboratively to prevent HAIs 15 %

Performance Improvement: identifies opportunities for improvement, coordinates Infection Prevention activities, considers both clinical and financial implications when making recommendations for change. 15 %

Professional Development: maintains a knowledge base of current Infection Prevention and Control information through networking, internet, literature, and professional meetings. 15 %

Research: disseminates published research findings, organizes, and shares findings from surveillance activities or outbreak investigations. 15 %
