Food Safety Specialist- SaratogaSmithfield Foods, Inc. - Bolingbrook, IL

Under guidance of the plant QA Director, the Food Safety Specialist is responsible for coordinating and maintaining Saratoga's environmental food safety programs and projects including HACCP and Environmental Monitoring for both Bolingbrook and Eastvale plant locations. Works closely with QA, Sanitation, Production, and Maintenance at both locations in evaluating and improving equipment and facility condition for food safety.

Responsibilities and tasks are written as follows:
Trained as Preventive Controls Qualified Individual to review food safety hazard analysis and assists in implementation of preventive controls as appropriate.
Maintains all HACCP supporting documentation and validation data.
Manages designated plant related food safety preventive controls (pre-requisite programs) and supporting programs including allergen control, GMPs, Environmental Monitoring, and working knowledge of other preventive control programs such as training, sanitation, pest control, preventive maintenance, supplier programs and traceability.
Utilizes problem solving skills to facilitate resolution of food safety issues.
Works with QA Management to develop and maintain training material for new and existing employees on basic HACCP and quality issues, and presents training as needed.
Manages environmental monitoring requirements and programs including allergen testing, pathogen sample collection, water and air testing.
Works with plant Sanitation and QA staff regarding sanitation verification and environmental monitoring programs, results and improvements to deliver food safety and customer requirements.
Works with outside laboratories on protocols, test methods and analyses to support food safety.
Performs designated QA food safety analytical and microbiological testing as needed.
Manages test methods, equipment and software to support food safety, such as ATP.
Manages QA food safety purchases and supply inventory.
Assist in third party, customer, and regulatory audits.
Follows GMP, Quality and safety practices.
Member of plant Food Safety Teams responsible for hazard analysis and designated preventive controls.
Performs Lock Out Tag Out and Try on processing equipment to evaluate equipment condition and safely collects environmental samples.

Bachelor\u2019s Degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university in Food Science, Microbiology, Animal Science or related field and 2 years' Quality Assurance experience in a food manufacturing environment, required.
FSMA Preventive Controls Qualified Individual certification recognized by FDA and Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA), preferred.
Understanding and training in HACCP, microbiology, regulatory and Quality Process Control.
Low moisture food related experience a plus.
Demonstrated understanding of quality control processes and equipment related to the food processing industry.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Ability to work independently and use a project management approach to work including design of project, setting milestones, establishing timelines and communicating updates as appropriate.
Ability to design, manage and present training topics to plant employees.
Strong planning, organizational, problem solving, and people skills.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret a variety of technical information in mathematical and/or narrative form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with remote location teams.
Bilingual in English/Spanish, preferred.
Travel to Eastvale location as needed to support plant operations.
May have oversight of Quality Assurance Technologists. Provides leadership and guidance to employees in the Quality Assurance Department.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Office and plant setting. The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.
Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area.
