The Environmental Health Safety (EHS) Specialist has extensive knowledge of and provides for the development and implementation of programs and systems to comply with international, federal, state and local EHS regulations and Company policies, strategies, initiatives and goals. Major areas of emphasis include: incident/injury investigation, worker’s compensation and ergonomics, employee health and safety programs including ergonomic injury reduction and industrial safety management; waste management, air emissions, wastewater discharge, and energy monitoring. The EHS Specialist will work directly with the EHS Manager, regional support, and the EHS Team to develop and implement systems that comply with Medtronic EHS Standards and procedures to reduce employee exposure to risk.

**A Day in the Life**

•You will establishe systems for the monitoring of workplace safety risks and environmental impacts through the analysis of work processes, materials, equipment and the work habits of employees.

•You will identify potential or actual areas of non-compliance through audits or inspections.

•You will ensure appropriate corrective action and preventive action is taken to address non-conformance issues.

•You will develop and implement EHS training programs for employees in areas, such as, regulated EHS training, hazardous material safety and handling, emergency response, waste management, and life safety.

•You will communicate, present and provide education and training to the organization as required to assure sustainable programs and processes within EHS responsibilities of the business.

•You will use judgment in data analysis to develop and design solutions to resolve intricate EHS regulatory and technical issues.

•You will ensure effective and sustainable EHS systems, programs and processes are in place. Makes improvements of processes, systems or products to enhance performance of the job area.

•You will implement and monitor compliance with federal and state EHS regulations and Medtronic EHS standards.

•You will partner with and educate business functions to assure that employee safety, environmental sustainable practices and compliance with EHS regulations are supported.

•You will recommend EHS goals and objectives and support the organization in the implementation of EHS goals and objectives.

•You will establish, perform and report metrics pertinent to EHS activities.

•You will obtain and maintain Health Safety records and required Environmental permits, licenses and documents.

•You will manage EHS job functions for duties such as job safety analyses/risk assessments, EHS training, workplace incident analyses, industrial hygiene evaluations, EHS inspections, environmental regulatory reporting, permit negotiation, data collection / analysis and internal audits.

•You will conduct ergonomic risk assessments and makes appropriate recommendations.

•You will evaluate new hazardous materials to ensure compliance in EHS requirements and facility procedures.

•You will conduct EHS reviews for new product development, facility modification, product manufacturing modifications and new equipment/machinery installations. Facilitates EHS reviews for product transfer to/from other facilities.

•You will work independently under limited supervision to select and apply EHS principles, theories and concepts and uses independent judgment to develop and design practical solutions to EHS issues. Analysis provided is in-depth in nature and often provides recommendations on process improvements.

•You will be responsible for emergency and spill response plans, and disaster preparedness plans, materials and equipment. Oversees the facility emergency response team to ensure appropriate training, practices drills and equipment are in a ready state. Primary EHS contact for facility EHS emergencies.

•Partner with business functions to resolve EHS problems.

•Responsible for the monitoring of employee exposure to chemical and other toxic substances and physical hazards, including Industrial Hygiene (IH) sampling and coordinating the activities with Industrial Hygienists, and other safety consultants as required.

•You will establish, perform and report metrics pertinent to EHS activities.

•You may train, coach and review the work of lower level professionals.

•You will perform incident analysis, develop and maintain and safety audit program to continually increase safety awareness throughout the organization.

•You will manage and review loss histories and OSHA Log summaries to identify trends and make recommendation to reduce and eliminate workplace hazards. Communicate adverse trends to Management.

•You will support Workers Compensation Program by assisting in case management, restriction interpretation, return-to-work initiatives and tracking LWD with cost to company.

•You will investigate, evaluate and adjust claims in accordance with established claim handling standards and laws.

•You will review, approve or provide oversight of medical, legal, damage estimates and miscellaneous invoices to determine if reasonable and related to designated claims. Negotiate any disputed bills or invoices for resolution.

•You will assist in the selection, referral and supervision of designated claim files sent to outside vendors. (i.e. legal, surveillance, case management, etc.)

•You will effective and timely coordination of communication with claimants, physicians, adjustors, attorneys and other appropriate parties throughout the claim adjustment process.

•You will attend and participate at hearings, mediations, and informal legal conferences, as appropriate.

•You will supervision of all claim activity for specified accounts.

•You will handle compliance with Corporate Claim Handling Standards and special client handling instructions as established.

**Must Have:**

**_To be considered for this role, the following minimum requirements must evident on your resume._**

•Bachelor’s Degree in related field and 3 years of experience OR Master’s Degree in related field with 2 years of experience

•Experience in California and local environmental, health and safety (EHS) regulatory compliance

•Program and project development and implementation experience

**Nice to Have**

•Master of Science Degree in Environmental, Health, Industrial Safety (or related technical field) with 3 years of experience

•EHS experience preferred in healthcare / medical device industry

•Hazardous waste management experience preferred

•Strong chemistry skills

•Knowledge: Complete understanding and application of environmental, health, safety principles, concepts, practices, and standards.

•Problem Solving: Develops solutions to a variety of complex problems. May refer to established precedents and policies.

•Discretion/Latitude: Work is performed under general direction. Participates in determining objectives of assignment. Plans schedules and arranges own activities in accomplishing objectives. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.

•Impact: Exerts some influence on the overall objectives and long-range goals of the environmental, health, safety family. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve objectives would normally have a serious effect upon the administration of the organization.

•Liaison: Represents organization as a prime contact on contracts or projects. Interacts with senior internal and external personnel on significant matters often requiring coordination between organizations

•Ability to make decisions and work independently

•Good computer skills (Windows™ software)
