Position Summary

This is the second level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role job classification. Engineering Technologist II provides technical expertise to solve more complex problems and leadership skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise, with some supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with a high degree of independence.

This position will be responsible for reliability improvement for a geographic area within the Triad Zone. The primary job functions will be to perform field outage investigations, correct outage coding records, address escalated customer and NCUC inquires related to reliability, and initiate reliability improvement projects. Additional job functions will include vegetation planning prioritization, storm restoration leadership, and training for OMS and outage coding. Grid Improvement Project work identification within the assigned operations area is a key function.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following

Plays an active role in completing the Planning and R&I work plan on time and within budget.

Identifies, develops, and/or manages the necessary volume of projects to aid in successfully completing the funded work plan.

Prioritizes work appropriately to maximize the benefit of Capital investments and O&M spending.

Makes prudent use of the Planning and R&I budgets by managing personal expenses and proposing cost effective solutions to make infrastructure and reliability improvements.

Minimizes the cost of initiated projects by providing adequate lead time to execute the work (current year and out-years).

Works effectively with other departments as needed to ensure appropriate resources are in place to complete the funded work plan.

Demonstrates support of budget challenges and gaps as they arise throughout the year.

Identifies and uses new technologies and processes to improve efficiency.

Communicates with internal and external customers in a professional and timely manner to maximize customer satisfaction.

Acts with a sense of urgency and takes ownership of issues and problems until resolved.

Maintains appropriate documentation of projects, issues, customer interactions, and technical studies as necessary.

Strives to provide exceptional customer service within area of responsibility (examples may include analyzing power quality issues, fault current requests, being prepared for Method of Service meetings, being responsive to Economic

Development requests, leading or participating in infrastructure Planning meetings, supporting internal departments as needed, arc flash studies, etc.)

Promotes Reliability and Capacity Planning improvements and programs.

Provides accurate and timely information to GIS for updates.

Responsive and available to assist in after-hours outage restoration of service (call out, storms, etc.) as needed which includes utilizing available technology to improve outage response.

Investigates major and repeat outages, accurately corrects coding, and completes follow-up work as needed to mitigate additional outages.

Provides innovative means to improve outage prevention and outage response.

Expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with a high degree of independence.

Coaches and mentors other Engineering Technologists.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or an Associates degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent) with a minimum of two (2) years of experience, or a minimum of six (6) years of experience in lieu of a degree

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic background

Experience in applying the basic principles of project management

Effective verbal and written communication skills

Experience in the utility industry

Proficient and innovative with the use of technology, including the capability to operate in a mobile office environment

Proficient with corporate outage management system applications

Extensive outage restoration and storm response experience

Distribution Reliability and Planning Experience

Proficient with the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, Communicator/Lync and other software applications

Proficient with the use of Maximo, or other Corporate work management system applications

Specific Requirements
