Description





The Public Law Center (PLC), Orange County's pro bono law firm, is committed to providing access to justice for low-income residents. Now in its 37th year of service, PLC works with over 1,400 volunteer lawyers, paralegals and law students to provide free civil legal services, including counseling, individual representation, community education, and strategic litigation and advocacy to challenge societal injustices. PLC has supported human trafficking victims since 2004, is a founding member of the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force, and serves as a trusted legal referral partner for Task Force member groups.





Qualifications







  • Admission to California Bar


  • A demonstrated commitment to public interest work and desire to assist crime victims


  • Strong writing, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills


  • An ability to provide victim-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally competent legal assistance to crime victims/survivors


  • An ability to work collaboratively in a variety of contexts and with multiple organizations to facilitate comprehensive services to crime victims/survivors


  • Those with legal experience in immigration, crime victims’ rights enforcement and victim services are strongly encouraged to apply


  • Law school clinic, externship, summer or other relevant practice experience a plus


  • Must have own transportation, valid CA Driver’s license, good driving record and own insurance


  • Ability to begin the fellowship on or about June 1, 2018 and serve for 2 years


  • Proficiency in Spanish required






Duties and Responsibilities







  • Provide linguistically accessible, culturally competent, trauma-informed legal services to survivors of trafficking. Activities will include: screening service seekers for legal issues arising from sex or labor trafficking; providing limited counsel and advice on legal rights and remedies available to survivors of trafficking; providing direct representation to immigrant survivors with meritorious T Visa, U Visa, adjustment of status, or other immigration remedies; and coordinating with PLC’s other legal units and partner organizations to ensure that all trafficking victim clients receive wraparound services, including in housing, family law, and other related matters.


  • Conduct outreach to private bar with ties to Orange County to increase awareness of human trafficking issues in the region


  • Provide training and technical assistance to pro bono attorneys about how to provide trauma-informed, client centered, culturally sensitive immigration services to survivors of trafficking


  • Recruit, train and provide technical assistance to pro bono attorneys who will provide victims’ rights advocacy and post-conviction relief in related criminal investigations or proceedings to survivors of trafficking


  • Conduct outreach to partners in immigrant communities to increase awareness of trafficking and legal rights and services available


  • Contribute to programmatic reporting required under the federal award


  • Collaborate with other Equal Justice Works Crime Victims Justice Corps Fellows


  • Actively participate in mandatory in-person training programs including two-day Crime Victims Justice Corps Victim Law Boot Camp training on June 28-29, 2018 in Washington, DC; learning event at the end of the Fellowship; annual three-day Equal Justice Works Leadership Development Training in October/November 2018 and 2019 in Washington, DC; and training calls with the National Crime Victim Law Institute



    • Represent PLC at legal networking and community outreach events


    • Occasional evening and weekend work required


    • Other duties as assigned










Salary & Benefits







  • Annual salary of $48,000-$50,750 DOE


  • Benefits: Generous benefits including health, dental, vision and life insurance and payment of State and local bar dues.
