POSITION SUMMARY:

Operates Y of Central Maryland van to transport program participants safely to and from local schools and field trip destinations according to Y policies and procedures.

Ensures the vehicle is maintained according to Y policy and MVA regulations.

Communicates with children, parents, and other staff members on a regular basis.

Participates in staff meetings, special events, and trainings as assigned.

Must be available weekdays between 3pm and 7pm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Complies with all applicable MVA regulations and Y policies to ensure the safe transport of program participants; reports any accidents or traffic violations to supervisor immediately.

Follows established routes and ensures that students are released to an authorized adult at designated stops only.

Conducts a pre- and post-trip inspection each day to ensure that the vehicle is in a clean and safe condition, maintains a vehicle First Aid Kit, and ensures that all vehicle emergency equipment is in operational condition and on the bus at all times.

Keeps an accurate record of mileage and gas expenditures, transports vehicle for required inspections, alerts supervisor to needed repairs, and submits records to supervisor as required.

Ensures that all insurance, registration, and passenger information is in the vehicle at all times.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Ability to lift and carry children and other items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Ability to use arms, legs, hands and feet, with or without corrective devices, to accomplish the job, including evacuation of the vehicle during an emergency situation. stops only.

SCOPE:

Ability to work under the supervision of the preschool director.

Ability to ensure staff assigned to assist on the van carry out responsibilities regarding the safety of all riders.

Required Skills

Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner to children, parents, guests, and other staff members. Should be able to speak and be understood under normal circumstances; and hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid.

Ability to understand and implement emergency evacuation procedures and protocols during planned drills and unexpected emergency situations.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Ability to communicate assertively and effectively to children and staff of various ages and backgrounds.

Ability to enforce all rules and to make effective decisions to assure the safety and security of van passengers.

Required Experience

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Must complete a physical examination with a negative TB test.

Must complete a criminal background check.

Must have a High School Diploma or GED.

Must have a clean record per DMV records and at least one year of driving experience.

Must fulfill the Y Driver Safety Training requirements prior to driving for the organization.

Must complete Basic Y Courses within first 90 days of employment.

Must complete continuing education units as specified by the OCC on an annual basis.
