Design Researcher, X

Mountain View

This role is for X’s Central Design team which collaborates across X’s early-stage moonshots. The team is made of User Researchers as well as Interaction, Visual, and Industrial Designers and prototypers. The job of the Design Researcher is to identify insights about the intended user, space, or domain of an X moonshot—informing concept generation, product/business requirements, or market focus. Current early-stage X projects include robotics, energy, and a range of still-secret innovations.

Research at X requires significant creativity and flexibility. Your day may involve conducting expert interviews or site visits to understand a new domain, synthesizing findings into opportunity spaces for technical exploration, or testing early concepts with potential users.

You have a strong interest in technology and have worked alongside designers, engineers and product managers. You thrive in an ambiguous work environment and can work across multiple projects.

X is a moonshot factory where uncomfortably ambitious, potentially world-changing new ideas such as self-driving cars, balloon-powered Internet and smart contact lenses are developed and taken out into the world. X projects have the potential to transform the lives of billions of people and make the world a radically better place. We’re a team of makers, entrepreneurs, engineers and scientists with deep technical expertise who love the challenge of the seemingly impossible. X was formerly known as Google[x].

Collaborate with multiple project teams comprised of scientists, engineers, and product managers to scope, develop and execute on early-stage product research.

Conduct and lead key research activities including in-context fieldwork, interviews, surveys, design sprints, value prop iteration and testing, literature reviews, and other forms of formative, iterative, and evaluative research.

Understand and incorporate complex technical and business requirements into research.

Write and present research findings and insights to cross-disciplinary teams in a clear, concise, and compelling way.

Find ways to invite design, engineering, and strategy into the research process, to foster deeper understanding and collaboration. Identify new opportunities for high-impact research and execute on them.

Minimum qualifications:

BA/BS degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology or Information Science, or equivalent practical experience.

5 years of work experience in user experience research.

Experience with the principles of design research, including qualitative and survey-writing experience.

Preferred qualifications:

Master's or PhD degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology or Information Science

Interest in product development and experience in connecting research findings with new product ideas.

Strong understanding of strengths and shortcomings of different research methods, including when and how to apply them during each product phase.

Independent, proactive, organized, and detail-oriented.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and collaboration skills.
