Corrosion Manager

Primary purpose:

Administers corrosion control program for assigned region; accountable for related activities including design installation, operation and maintenance of all corrosion control facilities for maximum efficiency and safety. Ensures compliance with policies and procedures mandated by state and federal pipeline safety regulations.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Supervises regional corrosion control program in order to achieve goals within budgeted funds and available personnel; plans projects and designates accountability for assignments, reviews progress, directs changes in priorities and schedules as needed to assure work is completed in an efficient and timely manner. Participates in the selection/promotion of staff, salary change considerations, and disciplinary matters.

Conducts performance evaluations and resolves grievance. Provides training and motivation to make full use of individual capabilities and to meet changing system demands. Orients new employees as to procedures, policies, location and operation of equipment or assigns such orientation and familiarization to appropriate personnel. Coordinates annual refresher, safety and emergency response training.

Assists the Local Director of Operations in the development and administration of regional capital and maintenance budgets based on staffing and resource requirements, cost estimates, objectives and goals.

Monitors and documents expenditures assuring compliance with approved budget and staffing levels.

Designs corrosion monitoring and cathodic protection systems through evaluation of survey data, confers with departments responsible for contracts, environmental compliance and right-of-way procurement.

Plans, coordinates, and directs jobs, determines priority of corrosion control projects and installation of protective measures.

Consults with the Director of Operations on major projects, budget proposals, and priorities.

Establishes and maintains professional relationships with local and regional NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers) organizations.

Represents Company at various regional corrosion correlating committees.

Delegates and reviews Company's notifications to various agencies, companies, and committees of corrosion protections systems.

Maintains required records, including assembly, compilation and review of reports. Enters computer data and generates reports. Reviews as-built drawings and annual survey data. Make corrections as needed and forwards modified drawings to Regional Headquarters for recording changes. Analyzes field test data from annual and interim surveys and determines best corrective action.

Investigates corrosion problems in the field through survey work and/or research and may coordinate some activities with other Corrosion Engineers and/or vendors when necessary.

Resolves cathodic protection and interference problems involving measures to be taken, as well as any system adjustments. Implements corrective action through corrosion personnel or oversees work of outside contractor.

Coordinates and directs daily activities of Corrosion Technicians.

Consistently maintain and demonstrate a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets, employees, and the general public.

Position Requirements


Bachelors degree or higher in Engineering, Science or related field from an accredited school or relevant work experience that has developed equivalent engineering or corrosion skills.

NACE International Corrosion Specialist’s or Cathodic Protection Specialist’s (CP-4) certification desirable.

Supervisory experience preferred.

Experience / Specific Knowledge:

NACE International Corrosion Specialist or Cathodic Protection Specialist (CP-4) certification.

In depth working knowledge of pipeline operations, project management, risk management concepts, engineering principals, and DOT Part 195 regulations

Design, construction, and troubleshooting of corrosion monitoring and cathodic protection systems.

Practices, procedures, tools, materials, and equipment used in cathodic protection of refined oil pipelines.

Corrosion instrumentation.

Occupational hazards and required safety precaution related assigned duties.

Pipeline operations and location.

Utility operations and right-of-way.

Protective coating used on petroleum pipelines.

Certification, licenses, registrations:

A satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company and a current, valid State driver's license are required.

Must be able to obtain and hold a valid TWIC Card.

Competencies, skills, and abilities:

Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, Outlook, and CPDM (Cathodic Protection Data Manager).

Well-balanced interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communications skills are required.

Must be accountable and take direction from Managers; keep required work schedules, which include regular and predictable job attendance; focus attention on details; follow work rules.

Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks are essential.

In order to meet the various maintenance and general operational requirements, a mechanical aptitude is necessary.

Ability to:

Effectively manage; train and lead subordinates to ensure department goals and objectives are accomplished in a timely and successful manner.

Exercise skill in the monitoring, maintenance, and repair of cathodic protection facilities.

Plan, organize, and oversee assigned work programs.

Analyze and evaluate operations; develop and implement corrective action to resolve problems.

Demonstrate a good sense of direction in order to locate remote pipelines, rectifiers and test stations.

Physically perform the essential job functions.

Physical demands:

Employee must be physically capable of completing and satisfying all training requirements as stipulated by local, state or federal agencies and/or Company Policy.

Work is performed outside in varying and sometimes extreme weather situations.

Field activities may include walking to and amidst work and/or construction sites, climbing in and out of trenches, working around heavy equipment, negotiating rough terrain, areas of loose rock and working in confined spaces.

Use senses of sight, hearing, and smell to aid in the identification of systems and equipment malfunction.

Distinguish basic colors.

Operate a 4-wheel vehicle for off road driving.

Perform physical labor in a variety of extreme climactic conditions, including walking, bending, stooping, climbing tanks, digging, lifting and general manual labor.

Frequently may walk up to 5 - 10 miles in a day, including through brush and rugged terrain in temperatures that can range from 20 to 120 F.

Work may involve the use of weed and brush cutting equipment and other hand tools.

Approximately 30% of the work may be performed in an office environment. The balance of the work may involve negotiating rough terrain, mountainous or desert regions, or heavy urban traffic areas.

Working Conditions:

Position subject to 24-hour call-out, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Climatic conditions are determined by location assignment and may include severe seasonal changes including both winter conditions with frequent snow or extreme summer heat and sun, depending upon geographic location.

Survey work frequently involves getting dirty, sweaty, dusty, and hot, especially during summer months.

Drives a 4-wheel vehicle up to several hours per day. Must be able to drive pipeline right-of-way without accidents or equipment damage.

Travel to remote areas within a particular region may involve extended periods of driving, both on and off road and could involve exposure to electrical shock, very difficult terrain, traffic hazards, snakes, spiders and other crawling and flying insects, cuts, bruises, etc.

Work in remote areas is often performed alone and without direct supervision; judgment is required when consultation with supervisor is not possible. Must schedule and monitor own work.

Extensive travel may be required including overnight stays for several days.

Must be willing and able to travel at least 40% of the time throughout Mid-Continental Region-Texas, Oklahoma, Montana, Illinois, Iowa, Canada, and other locations as required in performing job duties, using motor vehicle and air travel as primary modes of transportation.

Extended periods of sitting may be required for administrative activities

Hydraulics experience desired.

Knowledge of piping, valves and pressures.

Knowledge of pipeline operations.
