General Summary: This is an expert level position responsible for providing leadership on highly complex activities and may have management responsibility for professional staff specializing in one functional area of Audit such as Insurance, Corporate, or Internal Claims Audit and with the ability to contribute across functional areas of Audit. This position works individually and in teams to lead projects. Individuals rely on wide latitude of creativity, independent decision making and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
May supervise and/or manage work of staff. May actively participate in the hiring, development, performance and compensation decisions affecting assigned staff. Acts as a mentor/teacher to raise the level of expertise within his/her team or other business partners. Directs resources and produces results to solve problems or issues. Owns the outcome of his/her staff’s work as well as his/her own efforts. Demonstrates strong knowledge and creativity and facilitates the design of testing plans; provides direction on their execution in order to analyze and evaluate risks and controls around Enterprise objectives. Review workpapers and provide review comments to audit staff. Analyzes workpapers and risk and controls; provides expert consulting support to his/her functional area within Audit and to business areas. Demonstrates initiative in making recommendations for appropriate action by business partners and prepares related audit reporting in consultation with business partners. Uses risk knowledge and audit skills to lead and drive efforts that streamline activities for efficiencies and to enhance productivity. Participates or leads small initiatives and projects for business partners and within Audit. Ensures compliance with internal controls policies, Audit procedures and applicable external standards. Monitors industry trends, emerging risks and issues in support of Audit processes and assesses opportunities and impacts. May perform other duties as assigned. Develops strong partnerships with senior business management to enhance risk management and achievement of the business area’s results. Maintains a broad network of contacts partners across functional areas aimed at providing business value. Ability to clearly communicate broad risk management and control issues identified within audit reports, proactively recommends the most appropriate/effective recommendations to decision makers including senior management. Utilizes more complex or creative ways of displaying supporting data.  Facilitates and provides direction for Audit and internal control systems and audit programs and procedures that support the specific functional area (IA, IC, IT, ICA). Demonstrates an expert working knowledge of Unum’s products, services, technology and business processes (including customer, market and industry knowledge), his/her specific functional area, its issues and the technical skills required to support it.  Job Specifications
Relevant four year degree and professional certification preferred, or comparable experience, with at least five years work experience Strong project management skills for audit and consultative engagements. Effectively and independently prioritizes and manages own projects simultaneously and provides direction on projects and prioritization to less experienced staff. Ability to respond quickly and positively to change; viewed as a promoter of change management. Mentors less experienced staff on consultative and soft skills such as influencing, communication, and building partnerships. Highly motivated individual able to take independent actions to solve problems/issues without the involvement of manager. Demonstrated ability to achieve strong results and leadership against Audit and business objectives. Well developed communication, negotiation and presentation skills, demonstrating an ability to communicate complex issues and ideas in a clear, concise manner. Adept at influencing others at all levels and handling group dynamics. Excellent research and analytical skills and ability to articulate relationships and impacts between complex processes, internal and external issues and broad risk trends and mentor others to provide quality analytics that result in actionable outcomes. Strong understanding of technical environment as it relates to audit metrics. Advanced EXCEL skills and proficient in Word and PowerPoint. Represents Unum’s ethical and professional standards at all times. Technical Competencies Internal Controls:
Expert understanding of SOX control framework for  GAAP financial reporting Expert understanding of NAIC Model Audit Rule framework over Statutory financials Internal Claims Audit:
