Consultant, Risk Management Job

We are seeking an uncommon professional to join our team as a Consultant, Risk Management

Under the specific direction of the risk management manager and the general direction of the risk management director, this position will conduct both virtual (WebEx) and on-site risk management analyses and assignments at our insured credit unions. The work to be completed will cover services/risk areas, as well as guide and consult with credit unions to assist with risk mitigation efforts. This position will also provide technical expertise and training, as well as assistance with sales, retention, and underwriting. The position will be located from your home office in the state of Washington or Oregon.


1. Conduct risk management analyses with insured credit unions in an effort to reduce losses for both the credit union and CUNA Mutual Group. This includes providing a final report of your observations and discussions to be reviewed with management during an exit meeting. Analysis efforts may be politically sensitive or complicated credit union situations including employment practice liability, employee dishonesty, lack of faithful performance, etc.

2. Provide expert level knowledge of bond and corporate property and casualty coverages, risk exposures associated to these coverages, and preventive measures to reduce the probability of loss occurrence for natural person credit unions; and possibly credit union service organizations, shared service centers, and corporate credit unions through customized analyses.

3. Serve as the subject matter expert by assisting in developing risk management brochures, user guides, and presentation materials for your area of expertise to be used for formal and informal training presentations to credit unions, leagues, chapters, state and federal regulators, internal auditor associations or other internal staff. This may include answering technical and marketing questions from the field.

4. Assist in compiling competitive intelligence to ensure our future in the credit union marketplace by forwarding information to the appropriate business partners. Develop in-depth understanding of the divisional marketplace in conjunction with key business partners and assist in developing action plans (sales/conservation/loss prevention) for targeted credit union activity. Aid in identification of new market needs and potential solutions to those needs.

5. Participate in strategic planning, and/or the development of department goals and objectives. Make recommendations and assist in the design, development, implementation, maintenance and improvement of quality control.


1. Bachelor's degree in accounting, insurance, finance, business or equivalent professional experience in risk management, underwriting, property and casualty insurance, or credit union internal operations.

2. 6+ years experience in financial institution auditing, lending, operations or a related field. Professional certifications such as CFE, CPA, CIA, CRM, or related risk management, insurance or accounting designations are highly desirable.

3. Thorough understanding and knowledge of Corporate Property and Casualty products and related services to meet credit Unions' needs. Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of financial management concepts, financial/regulatory trends, economic principles and their related impact on financial institutions.

4. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, specifically for the development of loss prevention presentations, training materials, and the ability to facilitate discussions of documents, concepts and trends. Superior customer service skills and demonstrated organizational, analytical, planning, project management skills are required.

5. Evidence of commitment to continued education and development to remain up-to-date on insurance functions and knowledge of the insurance industry and current risk management trends.

6. Willingness to travel overnight 50% to 75% in multi-state territory.
