As a member of the Advanced Forestry Systems (AFS) team at Weyerhaeuser you will work on a diverse range of projects involving growth and yield modeling, tree taper and volume estimation, forest inventory, remote sensing, quantitative silviculture, harvest scheduling, economic modeling, and long-term silvicultural study design, implementation, and analysis. The AFS team mission is to ensure the availability of reliable and cost-effective forest information for the optimal management of Weyerhaeuser land and timber. The AFS team is committed to fulfilling this mission by providing world-class data acquisition, analytical technologies, and support.
This position will be based out of the Weyerhaeuser headquarters building in the heart of Pioneer Square in downtown Seattle, with occasional travel to regional offices across the country.
Roles and Responsibilities
Develops, validates, and implements:
Individual-tree forest growth models including silvicultural treatment and wood property effects for forests across the U.S.;
taper and volume systems for commercial species in Weyerhaeuser's operating area and beyond;
forest sampling and inventory data collection systems;
remote sensing solutions for forest inventory, harvest planning, and property evaluation including LiDAR- and satellite-based approaches;
forest inventory quality control and monitoring systems (including cut-out analysis and reliability estimation); and
forest productivity assessment systems.
Explore, tests, and implements new forest biometrics solutions.
Collaborates on harvest planning and decision support systems development and implementation.
Communicates concepts, issues, and results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Provides technical review of analyses and interpretation of results going to peer review or of critical importance to our businesses and operations.

MS or PhD in biometrics, quantitative silviculture, or related field.
Experience or training in forest modeling, remote sensing, programming, and statistics is required.
Demonstrated proficiency in C , R, SQL, and Python is essential.
Candidates with experience or training in some or all of these disciplines are preferred: operations research, economics, wood properties modeling, and ecophysiology.
