Today, 99,000 of us are working to help people live not just longer, but better, in the more than 150 countries we serve.2nd Shift- (3 pm- 11:30 pm)The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Chemist I are highly technical and include the following:Performance of analytical testing on raw ingredients, packaging commodities, in-process product, finished product, and plant utilities per current methodology. This includes testing for release of product to manufacturing for further processing, filling, and finishing. This also includes planning, sampling, testing, audit of records and release of sample materials.Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.Conducts raw material, in-process and finished product sampling and testing including:  vitamin analysis, protein analysis, mineral analysis, fat by Mojonnier extraction technique, total solids determination, Iodide and chloride testing, vitamin C testing, simple titrations, Infra-Red spectrophotometry, polarimetry, moisture testing, organoleptic testing, choline determination, PAGE and ELISA testing, lactose, galactose and FOS analysis, nucleotide, gum arabic and soluble fiber analysis, tocopherol testing, and fatty acid profiles by gas chromatography, sediment testing, packaging inspection per acceptance procedures, etc.        Complete appropriate documentation, entering results into inventory and LIMS systems, audit and release of commodities and finished product. Performs Standardization for test and check can (preparation, sterilization and evaluation of test and check can), KOH, potassium citrate, citric acid and final water calculations and physical tests such as pH, viscosity, grain color, sensory evaluation.Makes batch adjustments by generating appropriate documentation for batch corrections and optimizations.Conducts control sample analysis to determine validity of concurrent testing per method, water testing of minerals and volatile organic contaminants, Clean in place (CIP) Residual testing, testing of compressed gases for moisture and hydrocarbons, daily flavor and aroma of oils and weekly peroxide testing of oils, and completes any associated documentation and housekeeping responsibilities.  Completes Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Quarterly standardization, maintenance, system suitability’s and testing.Complete housekeeping responsibilities such as washing glassware, waste disposal, general laboratory sanitation, etc. Demonstrate accountability and responsibility for EHS performance and compliance through active participation and support of Abbott’s EHS Program. Observes all safety rules and regulations.  Reports incidents, near misses chemical spills in the proper manner supervisor.Education Requirements:Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Math, or closely related technical field. ORTechnical Associates Degree plus 1 year of college chemistry with appropriate labs and 1 year of college mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry or calculus), plus 4 years of related work or equivalent plant experience, with at least 3 years of laboratory experience.ORHigh school diploma (or equivalent) plus 1 year of college chemistry with appropriate labs and 1 year of college mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry or calculus), plus 6 years of related work or equivalent plant experience, with at least 3 years of laboratory experience.Additional Requirements:Knowledge of applicable regulatory standards and requirements for infant formula and nutritionals.Ability to follow verbal instructions, follow written directions, prepare simple reports, read and record gauge and display readings.  Mathematics knowledge and basic statistical comprehension.  Ability to lift and push packages up to 60 lbs. in addition to normal sampling and laboratory work. This individual will recognize and report method procedure problems, out-of-specification conditions and report to supervision.  Ability to recognize potential threats to product quality. Responsible for detecting and correcting documentation errors. Strong teamwork and ability to work plant personnel in other departments.,datePosted:2018-06-26T00:00:00,title:Asst Chemist I,occupationalCategory:Quality,@context:http://schema.org}Asst Chemist I in United States - Ohio - Columbus | Quality at Abbott Laboratories
