Description

Design, develop, implement and maintain mission critical systems utilizing new and cutting edge information technologies to support the departments of the railroad.

Union Pacific Railroad is currently hiring JAVA / J2EE developers to work on the PTC Train Control Data (TCD) systems. The TCD system is mission critical to UP’s transportation network and operations. JAVA / J2EE developers are in the technical career path. The technical career path is for employees interested in an individual contributor role, who wants to work with other team members to ensure a project's success. The main elements of the technical path include: 1) No direct reports, 2) Heavy technical skills, 3) Heavy teamwork, 4) Heavy client/customer contact, 5) Heavy daily planning and execution, 6) Creativity.

This position requires highly motivated, creative individuals with strong technical skills who are able to work in a team to deliver complex solutions within limited time frames.

The position will report to Soma Kodali in the Operating Practices department.

Accountabilities

Design, develop, implement, and support applications to enable more efficient decision making, process automation, and/or operational effectiveness.

Work closely with customer departments to respond to questions concerning functionality of existing or proposed systems. This requires a high degree of customer responsiveness while following project management guidelines in reporting time and effort.

Work with other project members to assist in meeting project goals. Provide assistance to team members in problem solving to correct system errors. Provide assistance to team members in meeting target dates and in understanding applications of new technologies.

Assist the project leader in developing and reporting project schedules to meet the department and customer requirements.

Qualifications

Required

A Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field. Strong applicable experience (a minimum of 6 years JAVA / J2EE development experience) may be taken into account in lieu of a degree.

Preferred

3 year(s) experience in Information Technology developing mission critical JAVA / J2EE applications

Knowledge of XML schema definition and XML processing tools and techniques

Knowledge of Object Oriented development techniques and tools

Advanced communication skills both written and oral
