Assistant Service Shop ManagerHub Group, Inc. - Memphis, TN
The Assistant Shop Manager's primary objective is to optimize truck maintenance costs while minimizing truck downtime through application of best practices to the company shop safety and maintenance procedures. The Assistant Shop Manager makes daily tactical decisions on which tractors should be repaired at the shop and which should be sent to outside repair centers. The Assistant Shop Manager manages shop mechanics and provides directions to the shop administrative office with the overall goal of ensuring safe, cost effective and driver-friendly maintenance processes with a focus on productivity.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Manage day-to-day work assignments for shop mechanics, insuring shop productivity rate is being met on a daily basis.
Provide directions and instructions to administrative associates.
Complete monthly quality and safety inspections of the shop, shop equipment and tools.
Hold daily/weekly safety meetings with the shop mechanics, highlighting safety issues and recommendations for excellent safety adherence and zero lost time program.
Complete periodic safety checks for possession and proper use of Proper Protective Equipment and Lock Out Tag Out.
Establish and maintain credible, cost effective outside vendor network.
Make tactical daily decisions about which repairs will be done at the company shop and which repairs will be outsourced, selecting the right vendor for a given repair.
Keep open lines of communication with outside vendors concerning individual repairs with the goal of maximized truck uptime and minimizing cost.
Audit accuracy of invoice information entered into the TMT maintenance system by the administrative associates.
Maintain detailed extensive repair and accident listings with recommendations for pending repairs and sale. Prepare estimates of repairs for company equipment accident tractors and trailers.
Authorized to make decisions on repairs that do not exceed $2,500.00
Manage all new parts purchases and maintain proper inventory processes including proper entry, count and reconciliation in TMT maintenance system.
Perform end of month accounting functions and the closing of TMT.
Communicate with drivers for break downs, repairs, services and inspections, giving direction to repair facilities in an accurate, timely and cost effective manner.
Assist in the hiring process for shop mechanics
Be an active coach and mentor to service center mechanics, maintaining the standards of integrity while holding shop associates accountable for established goals.
Provide input for evaluation of service center mechanics.
Build group cohesiveness, pride and teamwork on ongoing basis.
Strong leadership skills with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
Strong knowledge of truck (Class 8)/trailer/chassis maintenance repairs either as a technician or at least 5 years of industry experience.
Strong knowledge of class A trucks with at least 5 years of experience: Preferred experience with Detroit/Paccar engines.
Demonstrated customer service and relationship building skills.
Broad understanding of fleet maintenance policies, DOT standards and industry practices.
Organized with the ability to deal with multiple activities in a fast paced environment.
Ability to work with outside vendors to get work accomplished in a timely and cost effective manner.
Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology and to recommend continuous improvement ideas and actions.
Team player with excellent communication skills.
Strong work ethic.
