The responsibilities described herein are performed in addition to the tasks specifically identified as Principle Accountabilities for the position of bakery clerk and bakery manager, and cake decorator.

An assistant bakery manager has these primary functions: 1) providing customer service; 2) performing basic department manager activities in the absence of the bakery manager; 3) overseeing and participating in baked goods production and sales; 4) controlling vendor orders and shrink management, 5) maintaining safety and sanitation standards.

Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities:   

Providing customer service – this involves:

Giving prompt, courteous “platinum level” customer service, activities include; recommending specials and promotions, giving samples, providing accurate price information, taking orders, packaging and price marking purchases. Knowledge of product varieties, specials and promotions and product packaging.

Taking complete telephone/catering orders (involves working knowledge of department policies and procedures, product varieties, prices and specials and promotions.

Adhering to weights and measures standards and health department safety and sanitation regulations (involves working knowledge of health department safety and satiation regulations).

Understanding and applying store procedures, standards and regulations.

Responding quickly and courteously and giving clear answers to customer inquiries, requests and complaints (requires knowledge of products, prices, specials, and promotions, department and store product location).

Understanding and applying store policies when dealing with customer complaints.

Performing basic department manager activities – this involves:

Serves as backup for department manager in his or her absence, which, in some cases requires organizing and directing departmental activities to meet sales objectives.  Organizing and directing work activities within budgeted payroll.  Recommending strategies to increase sales and decrease expenses.

Purchasing and ordering from sources and/or fabricating proper quantities of products to meet case, shelf and display requirements.  Presenting products properly (packaging, pricing, and dating).  Adhering to rotation schedule for all department products.  Setting product displays in accordance with weekly ads features.  Recommending new items and deletions of slow-moving items.

Processing damaged goods and returning credit.  Controls backroom inventory.  Checking all department charges and product prices.  Orders department supplies and maintains invoice records.

Organizing departmental functions; helps train and develop departmental personnel. Interprets company policy and procedures for department personnel.  Makes work schedules for department personnel.  Monitors work efforts relative to timetables and deadlines for task completion

Providing customer service such as:  responding to inquiries and requests from customers; handling and following through on customer complaints; maintaining prompt, courteous service to customers; providing store directory assistance

Overseeing and participating in baked goods production and sale – this involves:

Participating in all facets of baked goods production.  Activities include: measuring and weighing and mixing ingredients, proofing, rolling, cutting, molding, shaping, scaling, baking, frying, finishing, traying, thawing, etc.

Directing production amounts and times to meet customer demands.

Enforcing strict health department sanitation regulations, safety rules and procedures and quality control standards daily which includes:  inspecting goods during and after fabrications, checks date coding according to product shelf life, seeing that products are properly rotated/reworked, etc.

Assisting clerks with customer service, as necessary.

Preparing catered products and oversee catering service.

Controlling vendor orders and shrink management – this involves:

Ordering, purchasing, and receiving proper quantities of wholesale goods and products from vendors, within budgeted limits.

Computing gross profit analyses for individual vendor products to determine their feasibility.

Receiving in-store purchases and transfers charges to bakery department.

Seeing that bakery-only customers’ purchases are properly rung on sales register and that cash is properly received.

Maintaining safety and sanitation standards – this involves:

Upholding established safety and sanitation regulations for production and work areas, tools and power equipment, temperature controls for the coolers and freezers.

Performing routine daily cleanup of work areas, utensils, and dishes, etc.

Performing preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment, ovens, coolers, etc.

Assisting of training and supervising of bakery personnel – this involves:

Overseeing standards and procedures are followed, emphasizing equipment safety features and Weights and Measures standards.

Assisting in training and assigns specific duties to bakers and donut makers, as necessary.

Giving feedback to bakery manager on employee performance.


Additional Functions:

As with any Farm Fresh associate, the assistant bakery manager from time to time is required to perform a wide variety of tasks.  These assignments are nonetheless mandatory, and are necessary to ensure the smooth running of the store.  Such tasks may include:

Performing inventory counts.

Cleaning assigned areas.

Working other assigned areas.

Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Requirements:   

Frequent bending, reaching, carrying, climbing, pulling, pushing, lifting items up to 50lbs. while working in hot or cold damp areas for long periods of time and also involves standing for long periods of time and walking great distances.

Following labeling policies and procedures, product location and arrangement standards as well as cleaning and sanitation policies and procedures.         

Working quickly and efficiently to maintain established department productivity guidelines for cases or product pulled per hour.  Following oral and written instructions while adhering to policies and standards and attending to details.

Skill Set:

Initiative and enthusiasm to cope with changing circumstances and workloads under pressure. 

Ability to interface well with all departments of the company and to represent company and department in a highly professional manner. 

Work independently receiving a minimum of detailed supervision or guidance.

Multi-task oriented.

Simple math.
