Job Summary:

Responsible for leading and directing a team responsible for the design, implementation, and administration of workplace safety programs and public safety programs to support KCS objectives. Promotes a culture of safety across the organization, driving continuous safety improvement. Provides leadership for accurate internal reporting of train accident, highway-rail grade crossing, collision, occupational injury, and operational testing data. Implements processes to collect and analyze data and to conduct root cause analyses.

Job Duties:

Lead the Company’s safety and health team.

Analyze incidents and trends and create targeted action plans to mitigate risk.

Develop and implement a proactive safety program that complies with government regulations.

Collaborate with Company’s training team to establish and maintain effective and compliant health and safety training programs.

Oversee internal accident and incident reporting, general order publications, and other safety-related reports and publications.

Develop, implement and administer the proper public safety plans, projects, policies and processes focusing on grade crossing collision and trespass prevention.

Direct regularly-conducted risk assessments and audits.

Leadership role in Operation Lifesaver educational programs and activities

Identify, design and implement process improvements to the Company’s Operational Testing Programs.

Uphold the partner commitments of the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care® initiative, pledging to improve environmental, health, safety and security performance for facilities, processes and products throughout the entire operating system. Facilitate proper reporting, self-assessments, documentation, audits, and all other aspects of the Responsible Care® initiative to ensure continued RCMS® certification.

Provide guidance to senior leadership team on both strategic and tactical efforts to improve safety

Job Requirements:

Experience in the freight transportation industry (preferred)

Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene or related field

10 years experience in safety and health management

5 years experience leading teams, staffing, and managing performance

2 years management experience in a union environment

Experience in consulting with leadership across multiple departments to make strategic and operational decisions related to safety and health programs and regulatory compliance

Knowledge and experience working with regulatory agencies such as: FRA, OSHA, DOT, etc

Strong understanding of government safety and health regulations

Excellent leadership, communication, trouble-shooting and analytical skills.

Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
