AVP Data Science - Personal Lines Decision Analytics

Overview of the Position This position will advance the Decision Analytics agenda within the Product Design & Analytics department of the Personal Lines (PL) organization. The successful candidate will play an important leadership role within the Personal Lines organization, specifically in areas of predictive model development, analytical tool development, and other data science projects (e.g. optimization, simulation, data manipulation, exploratory analysis) that will enable the company to better manage and monitor its key operational assets.  This AVP role will have direct reports and will be responsible for mentoring junior and senior staff alike, leading projects, setting the strategic direction of the team, and being a technical subject matter expert. With respect to predictive modeling, Decision Analytics builds and maintains customer behavior models for Product, Marketing, Operations, and Actuarial. In addition to predictive modeling the team is responsibility for select tool build and delivery such as class plan benefits, and the growing analytical support demanded by the operations center (sales and service call center). A key initiative the successful candidate will need to advance is the investment in building insights and sales effectiveness in the Personal Lines call center. This role has high visibility to PL leadership and is a contributing leader to the company's enterprise-wide data science agenda. Responsibilities:Lead the team responsible for driving an understanding of call center sales agent level performance accomplished through three key areas of focus: creating and reporting key performance indicators, maturing existing speech analytics program, and driving sales effectiveness behaviors from an analytics perspective.Build, maintain, and deploy customer behavior-focused predictive models in Personal Lines operations using various methods in support of implementation of processes, procedures, and other initiativesCreate business value through exploratory data analysis on datasets to gain applicable insightsProvide qualitative and quantitative data support to ensure accuracy of characteristics and metricsAnalyze new data sources for availability and quality, and integrate with internal sources to support research or analyticsBuild repeatable processesTest and evaluate new software and methodologiesRegular communication with other data science teams and internal customersBuild and maintain applications developed by Decision Analytics or external partners for internal customersTake ownership of projects as a leading individual contributor as well as supervisor of data scientists QualificationsExperience & Skills Education & Experience: Degree in statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Analytics or other quantitative field required; advanced degree or strong experience preferred. 10 years of experience in statistical modeling or analysis required; 7 years relevant insurance experience (underwriting, product management, product development, actuarial) preferredTechnical/Functional Skills:Mastery of statistical modeling tools and techniquesComputer programming experience, deep R or Python familiarity strongly preferred, SAS preferredKnowledge of Hadoop framework and experience with R Shiny preferredCompetencies: Team player with ability to build partnerships with senior leadership and front-line staff alikeExperience manipulating data, creating insights and information out of raw data and programming skillsAptitude guiding business partners through complex situations using data and analyticsMastery of economics and/or insurance markets or related financial servicesExcellent communication, strategic and critical thinking skills in addition to strong quantitative skills CreativityFamiliarity with Agile frameworkDedication to developing teams and operating as a talent championBehaviors at the HartfordDeliver Outcomes – Demonstrate a bias for speed and execution that serves our shareholders and customersOperate as a Team Player – Work together to drive solutions for the good of The HartfordBuild Strong Partnerships – Demonstrate integrity and build trust with othersStrive for Excellence – Motivate yourself and others to achieve high standards and continuously improveEqual Opportunity Employer/Females/Minorities/Veterans/Disability/Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity or Expression/Religion/Age ** NO AGENCIES PLEASE **
