  • Throughout its history, the firm has handled many significant, high-profile matters for its clients. Some of the more significant cases include:
  • Markman v. Westview Instruments, Inc.: Duane Morris represented the plaintiff Markman in a patent infringement lawsuit. After winning a jury verdict, Markman lost the case in a subsequent directed verdict for the defendant Westview. The result of this case is that so-called Markman hearings are now routinely conducted in patent infringement lawsuits so that a judge will rule on the legal meaning of patent claims before the lawsuit is argued before a jury.
  • Tobacco Industry Litigation: Along with the Pittsburgh law firm of Buchanan Ingersoll, Duane Morris represented the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in a 46-state lawsuit against the tobacco industry. The litigation concluded with a landmark $206 billion global settlement agreement for the 46 suing states.
  • Duane Morris representation resulted in Eli Lilly & Co paying a combined $1.42 billion, including the largest criminal fine in history , $515 million, to settle charges that it illegally marketed the anti-psychotic drug Zyprexa for off-label use.

In 2012, the firm's summer associates rated the firm's program amongst the top three nationally, in The American Lawyer's 2012 Summer Associates Survey. Duane Morris received perfect scores from the summer associates in three key areas: training and guidance; full-time associate and summer associate interactions; and inclination to accept a full-time job if one was offered.

Duane Morris offers interesting challenges to law students who participate in their summer program. It believes the program offers a realistic picture of its practice to aspiring attorneys who have an interest in sharing its goals and serving its clients. The firm's program balances challenging work assignments with constructive feedback, work-related activities outside the office and enjoyable social events.

The associates are given interesting work assignments that include assisting lawyers in matters of importance, and observe depositions, hearings, trials, client and board of directors meetings, negotiating sessions and closings.

Summer associates participate in an orientation program, ethics discussions, training sessions on intranet research systems, courses on legal theory skills, writing and taking depositions. Moreover, summer associates receive informal feedback and evaluations of their work throughout the summer from the lawyers who assign them projects.

It is not all work, during the course of the summer, the summer associates become acquainted with the firms lawyers in a variety of social settings. Summer associates also attend numerous lunches and dinners, concerts, golf outings and professional sporting events. To foster a sense of community among summer associates, the firm also sponsors a social event, which includes only members of the summer class and their guests.
